I really wanted to assist families in my community. My birth was not exactly what I wanted, even though it was still an amazing birth. Experiences during my birth showed me that if you walk into that space without the confidence to advocate for yourself, or have a person on your birth team who knows the ins and outs of birth; that things can go left really fast. We have a tendency to just do what medical professionals suggest or tell us to do, and sadly providers often do not practice true informed consent. I wanted to have a business that not only assisted people during one of the most important days of their life, but to also teach them what questions to ask ANY provider, and to also educate them on the options they have and the risks and benefits each option has so they truly know which option is best for their family. Earth Designs Studio began as a hobby. I have always been creative but never really started to put my creativity to work until my children grew up and I was at the tail end of dealing with 3 breast cancer diagnoses that involved 8 surgeries. I also suffer from migraine headaches. So going with my creative flow has been challenging at times. Once I launched my Etsy Shop and participated in some live events, I realized that there is an audience for my art, which has boosted my confidence about getting my pieces out there. Read more>>
My entire thought process behind becoming a freelance artist was catalyzed by taking inspiration from the narratives and histories surrounding global black culture. My disposition comes from my historically fueled personal past of being homeschooled by my mother who would take her time making sure I understood social concepts and constructs around me. This better equipped me to make decisions for myself based on the environment around me and its own contextual history when doing anything. Whether it be making art in the form of pottery, grand-scale drawing or media. Read more>>
I’ve always really enjoyed figuring out how to start and scale businesses. The first company I ever started was when I was 14 years old, it was a landscaping business which had about $4,000 in revenue in one summer (that money was A LOT as 14 year old, I thought about how many bags of chips I could buy). Since then, I was always hooked on the idea of being able to start something from scratch and figure out how to build teams to scale a business. I’ve made so many mistakes from the small landscaping company to the numerous other companies I’ve started, BUT I’ve always known that working in corporate would not be sustainable for me in the long term. I basically stumbled into the idea of running my own business, which to me feels like it was meant to happen. My full time pottery practice and art studio-Outer Loop Arts- were both birthed out of the pandemic. In early 2020 my now business partner and I were both sharing a tiny studio space downtown, struggling to figure out how to work our messy crafts out of a small dusty space. When the pandemic hit and we both were out of our regular gigs we scrambled to figure out what was next and how we could sustain working in the arts outside of our homes during those uncertain times. It was this scramble that birthed Outer Loop Arts, we found an empty warehouse space and with the help of the community and our friends we put together what is now our thriving art studio. I originally started on this path because as I started sharing my work, requests for not only my originals but prints and merchandise began to spring forth with increasing frequency. Creating the supply to match that demand made me realize I thoroughly enjoyed making my work accessible to the people around me. It was less so about the monetary gain for me and more about the fulfillment that came with knowing there was someone out there that resonated with my work so heavily that they wanted it to beautify their space. I wanted to continue to provide that. Read more>>
My family migrated from India in 2001 to North Carolina. I was 12 years old with a lifelong dream of having my own fashion brand. I grew up with a passion for design and every opportunity I got I would go to the tailors in India with my mom and design outfits for myself. However, I also grew up knowing that my career choices were very limited as it was for most women in India. Coming to America was truly one a dream, and that’s when I knew I would eventually make my dream a reality one day. After graduating high school I was admitted into the NCSU College of Textiles. I graduated in 2010 with a Bachelors of Science in Textile and Apparel management. Read more>>
Before starting Wood, I was consulting in areas of marketing. When you are a consultant you are working on others projects, and I was starting to look for greater ‘ownership’ in my work – for the good, bad and ugly of it. Being in services all my life, deciding on a product focused business was a pretty high degree of risk and learning curve but super attractive to have something tangible to work on. Wood Underwear came about after a pretty comprehensive review of options and opportunities, including franchise opportunities and buying existing businesses. At the end of it, Wood came from a conversation and exploration with a dynamic group of young founders. Read more>>

I founded Artist Ummah because there was a need for a space where Muslim creatives could be their authentic selves. After 9-11, immigrant Muslims strove to be active members of their respective communities to dispel stereotypes and combat damaging narratives perpetuated by the media. I have spent a good part of my 20-plus-year career as a visual artist creating art to build bridges and promote understanding. This work was important because it paved the way for the next generation to grow, progress, explore, take risks, gain confidence–and go further than I ever dreamed possible. Read more>>
Starting my own business I wanted to create a safe space for not only myself but for everyone who entered! My first job after finishing nail school turned out to be a toxic workplace. Most people don’t know this, but I’ve been an entrepreneur since I was 9 years old. I sold candy with my younger sister, walked peoples dogs and raked their leaves. I would even clean houses as I got older. So being business minded was already in my spirit. When I got older and graduated from college, starting a business made sense after a while because I liked being on my own time and I liked doing something that didn’t feel like a job. Photography and videography has never felt like a job to me. It’s always felt like an outlet. Read more>>

I got comfortable with being more available for my family after I became a stay-at-home mom after having our last child in 2017. Starting a handyman business required careful consideration of various factors. I have a passion for fixing things, a desire to create a vision, mission, and strategy to pass down to my sons. I’ve always felt like I had my own ideas and creativity when it came to food. So I created Jaysfoodspot. Working in restaurants was always cool and I had a tendency to put my best foot forward, however after learning the menu and the repetitive nature of restaurants, after a while I felt stagnant, almost robot-like. I also saw the food that my community eats and thought, we can have that but let’s make it a little healthier and let’s put a little flare to it! I never like to feel like when I’m working it feels like work, I feel like cooking should be fun and that’s what I intend to do when it comes to working for myself. I started this so I can make a name for myself as well and give my food its own identity. Read more>>
