Hi T. Alexis, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Originating from Catawba County, NC, specifically Hickory, NC, I have a profound connection to my roots. However, my upbringing carries a distinctive twist due to my family’s extensive military background spanning an impressive five generations. This unique legacy was further enriched by my formative years spent being raised in Germany, a testament to my family’s enduring commitment to serve and the diverse experiences that have significantly shaped who I am today.

The individuals who have played a pivotal role in shaping my character are my grandparents. My grandfather, Reverend James N. Holloway, not only served as a pastor but also owned a highly esteemed janitorial service in Hickory, NC. Alongside him, my grandmother, Nettie G. Liles-Holloway, served as a dedicated first lady and a missionary, actively engaged in community outreach.

The time I spent with my grandmother before my move to Germany left an indelible mark on me. Together, we worked to assist disabled citizens, ran errands, provided comforting meals, and offered companionship to the elderly. My grandfather, through the church, extended counseling and fellowship to the community, while his business created job opportunities for part-time youth and community members alike. These experiences, combined with my family’s military background and the exposure to different cultures in Germany, have collectively shaped my values and perspective on community service, diversity, and commitment to making a positive impact on the world.

The creation of Astylux started nearly five years prior to my retirement from the U.S. Air Force, a transformative journey began, laying the foundation for my evolution into a business owner. The origins of this venture trace back to an extensive research undertaking that marked the genesis of a profound transformation.

Through this immersive exploration, a powerful realization emerged: the role of a notary held the potential to significantly enrich and uplift my community. However, my vision expanded beyond the conventional, encompassing the establishment of a meticulously tailored mobile notary service catering to the specific needs of Wayne County and its neighboring regions. This concept was born from a deep understanding of the challenges our community faced, particularly for those with disabilities or living far from traditional notarial sources.

Recognizing the unmet need for accessible notaries, especially outside regular business hours, fueled my commitment to addressing this gap. Drawing on my expertise as a Logistician and my educational background in Criminal Justice, a clear and resolute vision began to take shape—an integrated notary and courier service aligned with the convenience-driven ethos of the community.

Aspirations extended beyond personal success; I aimed to create opportunities for employment and mentorship, nurturing local talents in both the business and notarial domains. The path to realizing this vision led me to seek diverse guidance. Immersing myself in over twenty Small Business Association courses, both physical and virtual, refined my ideas into a cohesive blueprint. Explorations spanned the vast landscape of notarial services, uncovering opportunities as an Apostille Agent, I-9 Employment Verification Authorized Representative, Notary Signing Agent, and Courier.

Resources ranged from YouTube tutorials to information on government websites, enriching my understanding. Delving into resources from the Internal Revenue Service and the North Carolina Department of Revenue ensured compliance with tax regulations. Studying various statutes and laws related to notarial practices guaranteed adherence to legal requirements and the highest ethical standards.

At the core of my mission wasn’t just mobility but a strong commitment to environmental stewardship. Dedication to reducing paper and ink consumption found expression through electronic notarization, seamlessly merging ecological mindfulness with efficient service provision.

Enrolling in the Notary class at Wayne Community College, followed by the Electronic Notary course at Wake Tech Community College, marked the beginning of my formal journey. By August 2021, becoming a Commissioned Notary authorized me to execute notarial duties with precision and integrity.

Swift progress followed, leading to certification as a Notary Signing Agent in March 2022. Beyond notarization, I expanded offerings, recognizing the need for secure, timely document and small parcel delivery. Pursuing a licensed courier designation culminated in acquiring my courier license in June 2022.

This strategic move empowered expert transportation of documents and parcels, providing reliable service to individuals and businesses. Integrating this dynamic courier element into Astylux Notary & Courier Services aimed to bridge gaps in the local delivery landscape, playing a pivotal role in facilitating swift and secure transportation for those in need.

The foundation for impassioned aspirations took tangible form on February 14, 2022, with the formal establishment of Astylux LLC—a symbol of my unwavering pursuit of excellence. The grand inauguration of Astylux Notary & Courier Services on July 1, 2022, marked the beginning of a significant chapter devoted to redefining notarial and courier services in our community.

What I most desire the world to know about my brand and the story behind it is that this transformative journey has been characterized by unwavering determination, an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and an enduring commitment to service. By intricately weaving innovation, environmental mindfulness, and steadfast reliability, I have meticulously shaped Astylux—a testament to my solemn promise to wholeheartedly serve and uplift the community that holds a special place in my heart.

The challenges surfaced after I initiated my business. One of the significant hurdles I’ve grappled with involves the transition from a military lifestyle to civilian life. This profound shift exposed me to a new reality—one where the quality of life for some citizens in my own community is less than favorable. Observing these circumstances has been genuinely heart-wrenching.

Engaging with individuals in nursing homes, hospitals, those facing poverty, enduring domestic challenges, illnesses, and disabilities has been a truly eye-opening experience. Faced with such adversity, my challenge was not only to maintain composure but also to prevent my internal emotions from overwhelming me. It entailed upholding a strong exterior while empathizing deeply with the daily struggles these individuals endure.

During these challenging times, I leaned on God for guidance, strength, and understanding through prayer. Prayerfully, I sought divine support not just for myself but also for those individuals to whom I was providing service. This spiritual connection reassured me that I was in the right profession, fulfilling God’s purpose and making a positive impact in the lives of those in need.

One lesson that I learned is that starting a business is truly fulfilling. Social media, along with the insights of fellow entrepreneurs, often radiates an inspiring enthusiasm for others to embrace this journey. However, it’s crucial to proceed with meticulous care, dedicating ample time to delve into crucial aspects like federal and state regulations, demographics, financial commitments, marketing strategies, advertising campaigns, networking endeavors, continuous education, and beyond. These elements collectively fortify the longevity of your business, laying the groundwork for sustainable success.

Amidst this pursuit, it’s essential to center your focus on the genuine needs of the people you serve, rather than purely fixating on revenue generation. The true reward isn’t solely monetary; it resides in the profound impact you have on individuals. It’s in the way your services resonate with them, offering solutions and experiences that enrich their lives. This symbiotic relationship, where your business addresses genuine needs and leaves a lasting positive impression, becomes the heart of your journey.

After the exhilarating ride, head to Man With A Pan, owned by Antwan Short, and indulge in must-try dishes like the Philly Chicken Burrito and Chicken Tacos. On day two, continue the excitement with a visit to Stoney Creek Park for scenic views and outdoor activities. Immerse ourselves in the local culture on day three with a creative session at Paint & Play, owned by Kiapo Coley Copeland, in downtown Goldsboro, where you can engage in artistry while enjoying music and dance. Day four is dedicated to culinary delights at Los Fagones, renowned for the best Charcoal Rotisserie Chicken in town. Explore the charming boutiques in downtown Goldsboro for unique finds on day five and more restaurants such as The Laughing Owl, Up North Pizzeria, Brisas, or some delicious desserts at The Ice Storm. I would like to dedicate my shoutout to several incredible individuals and groups who have played instrumental roles in shaping my journey and supporting me along the way. First and foremost, my deepest gratitude goes to my son, who has been a constant beacon of light throughout my entire career. His presence has not only brought immeasurable joy but has also been a profound source of inspiration, teaching me the virtues of patience and illustrating what true resilience looks like.

I also want to extend my appreciation to my sisters, who have been a steadfast support system for over 11 years. They have not only kept me grounded during challenging times but have also been the wind beneath my wings, encouraging me to soar as high as I can and shine in my endeavors.

A special mention goes out to my previous Air Force supervisors, colleagues, and the dedicated troops I’ve had the privilege of leading. Each one has contributed to my growth by imparting valuable lessons in dedication, discipline, and leadership. Their collective influence has been instrumental in shaping my professional journey.

Last but not least, a heartfelt thank you to my family members for their boundless love and resolute encouragement. They serve as a constant reminder of the strength and greatness embedded in our DNA.
