Meet Secily Torres-spears | Face Painter and Mom

We had the good fortune of connecting with Secily Torres-spears and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Secily, what do you attribute your success to?
I’ve discovered that a massive part of my success in both my personal and professional life has been a willingness to make connections and put myself out there. As a stay-at-home mom, it can be daunting to make friends both for the sake of yourself and your little one, but it’s so rewarding to find your community and speak to people that understand your day to day. It’s the same with creative businesses! I met one of my most trusted colleagues and friend (@henna_warrior) after she put out a call for a second artist for a festival. I had doubts about whether I should put my hat in or not. I was nervous about my skills, to meet another established artist, and to work a big event, especially it having been one of my first few paid ones. I stepped out of my comfort zone and went for it. Since then, she’s helped me learn about more gigs, given me tips, and just co-hosted a networking party with me where we had artists from around the state do skills demos and socialized.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Growing into my style since I started has been an amazing thing to watch and I’m excited to see how it grows in the future. I like to think I have a nice blend of character/ animal designs and some more floral/ “adult” designs as well.
Social media has been such a big part of my learning as I try new things. Face painters across the world show off their tips and tricks and it feels like such a tight knit community. I’m now part of a Valentine’s group with one of the face painters I watched from afar when this was just a hobby. Talking to these people has increased my confidence in not only my art, but my speaking abilities as well.
Something I wish more people knew about face painting and body art and general is that anyone can get it! I am not just there to make kids smile; I can paint adults too. I accept everyone in my chair as long as they want to get painted! I use professional FDA compliant products that will not only look good, but will keep you safe as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
North Carolina is such a beautiful and historical place! From the Appalachians to the Coast there is just so much to do, so it’s hard to pinpoint my favorites. Downtown Raleigh is filled with the best museums and family friendly fun. That being said, the mountains are beautiful, and Western North Carolina needs so much attention after the tragedies of Hurricane Helene last fall. So many towns would love to welcome tourists, so I encourage people to research towns that could use some love.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank everyone in my family. My husband happily lets me paint him into the silliest things with a smile on his face and my baby boy is the reason I even got into this industry in the first place. My parents and in-laws have helped me with supplies, and my aunts, uncles, and siblings always make time for a call to ask how my events go. Before I made any face paint and children’s entertainer friends, they were all there for me to talk their ears off about my day.
