We had the good fortune of connecting with Savannah Overcash and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Savannah, how do you think about risk?
Risk is something that has always played a big part in my life. Starting a business from the ground up has certainly played a large part in that. For me, I have found that you have to be willing to take the risk, but you have to be smart about it. I’ve always been one to look at the worst possible scenario and prepare for that. In the end, you can have all the plans in the world, but eventually, you have to be willing to take the jump. There is a touch of intuition as well, though. I’ve found that as long as I am at peace (even though I might be nervous), it is usually the right decision.

What should our readers know about your business?
I own Nonnie’s Baking Co. We are located in Southport, NC and I like to call the company a “sweets boutique”. While so many think of a bakery having an array of products, we focus on quality. Because of this, we have less product diversity, but maintain excellent quality. If you walk into the storefront on a typical day, we have an assortment of cupcakes, cookies, Rice Crispy treats, cake jars, mini cakes, etc. We even bake our cookies in smaller quantities so they’re fresh! Who doesn’t want a warm cookie?!

We specialize in custom cakes – weddings, birthdays, special occasions, “just because” someone wants a cake! The biggest thing that makes us stand out is the fact that we do not cover any cakes in fondant. We only use buttercream to coat our cakes, but they look beautiful and smooth! We use an Italian Meringue Buttercream which is just sweet enough, light, and silky.

I have learned so much from opening a brick-and-mortar – things I could never have imagined learning before. Funding and construction brought its own headaches, not to mention actually building a client base, finding rhythm with employees in the kitchen, advertisement… the list goes on! This is the most stressed I’ve ever been, but I have never been happier and more fulfilled.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Southport is a gorgeous place to visit! I love to tell people that it is coastal without being beachy – but Oak Island is just a short drive! There are great restaurants (Fishy Fishy, The Royal James, Provisions, Moore Street Oyster Bar, Cafe Koa, etc.), bars (American Fish, The Pub of Southport, The Mullet).

The Cheese Shoppe has delicious sandwiches. The Hive, Tink Boutique, Mad River, and Boo’s and Roo’s are just a handful of boutique shops!

Don’t forget – the water is right around the corner. A little picnic on the water? Sign me up!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without a doubt, I would not be in this place in my life without my family and friends. I strongly believe that everyone is put into your life for a reason – even if it seems small at the moment. There are so many moments of blood, sweat, and literal tears – you’ve got to have someone to lean on sometimes. My family and friends have played an intricate role in everything (whether they believe it or not). They helped encourage and inspire; they allowed me to vent and cry; they’ve given advice; they’ve “advertised” for me to their towns; they’ve helped me physically with everything from the literal building of the shop, to scooping cupcakes! Apart from them, even those that I have only met once have made an impact. They’ve given advise on clients, pricing, logistics, and even just keeping sanity. Even if I could have done this on my own, I wouldn’t have wanted to!
