We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Kaufman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melanie, what inspires you?
For as long as I can remember, I have been inspired by nature and the outdoor world. I would rather be outside than in. I am in awe by the growth, color and life of other animals and plants. I am truly fascinated by our natural world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When the pandemic began, I went into survival mode. I was making everything I could teach myself to make. For years, I used essential oils in my personal life and my yoga classes. I began to grow herbs such as lavender, rosemary, mint and sage. I had always been a consumer of handmade soap and struggled with my own set of skincare issues. Next, I bought a melt and pour kit, added some essential oils, and made my very first batch of soap. It yielded about 6-8 small bars.

Doing something creative during this time, while saving money made me feel productive. I shared my soaps with friends and family-to rave reviews. I gave them as gifts and began to experiment with creating a solid base of organic oils. As I honed my soap making skills, I eventually decided to switch to the cold process method. Now, it brings me great pleasure to share my handmade soaps with friends from all around the country. I never use any perfumes, or dyes and I believe in living a simple life; utilizing products that are good for the body, both inside and out. I try to use organic and sustainable oils when possible, ensuring the finest in quality and craftmanship. After all, the skin is the largest organ of the body.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In my real life, I work at Birdsong Brewing Company. I would definitely take them there! The beer is great, affordable and the people are stellar. I have even made soap with a few of our beers.

Next up, Rosie’s Coffee and Wine Garden. It’s a beautiful place to read, grab a drink and enjoy the flowers. They do delicious seasonal drinks, and First Friday pop-up markets.

Another favorite spot of mine is The Culture Shop. They make the best BLT in town and it’s my go-to for wine, charcuterie, and local treats.

I am likely walking to all of these spots on the Sugar Creek Greenway. It’s a must when the weather is nice. I love running into neighbors, dogs and local friends on my greenway walks.

Also, walking to my HIIT gym called SWEAT440 NoDa. It’s fun, challenging and different everyday! You won’t leave there without breaking a sweat.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely! A few specific family members come to mind. My sister Jess has been my biggest supporter since the beginning. She has done everything from offering words of support, to helping me buy supplies and purchasing and sharing my soap with her networks. My Uncle Jeff also deserves a shoutout. He too, believed in me from the beginning. He helped me brainstorm ideas, invested financially and created my logo for me.
