Meet Louis Deveseleer | Calistree Founder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Louis Deveseleer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Louis, how does your business help the community?
In our fast-paced society, mental health issues like stress, depression and anxiety, and physical ailments from lack of exercise, have become widespread. These conditions significantly diminish the quality of life for those affected as well as those around them.
Regular exercise stands as a simple yet powerful solution. While it’s not the sole remedy, it plays a vital and lasting role in preventing and treating these conditions. The challenge lies in sticking to a fitness routine and knowing what exercises to perform. This is where Calistree steps in.
Unlike other apps that offer a fixed list of programs, Calistree crafts a tailored workout regimen based on your available equipment, objectives, and fitness level. As users engage in their workouts, the application precisely tracks their progress, adapting the exercises over time to facilitate gradual progress toward their goals. Notably, Calistree focuses on bodyweight exercises with a holistic approach that enhances strength, flexibility, balance, and cardiovascular endurance.
This approach yields two significant outcomes:
1. Users are liberated from the uncertainty of selecting exercises, as the app guides them through relevant and comprehensive training programs.
2. The application instills motivation by acknowledging every minor achievement, creating an engaging experience akin to a game where continual improvement is celebrated.
As a consequence, numerous users attest to how Calistree has empowered them to maintain a regular exercise routine, fostering not only physical and mental well-being but also heightened awareness of detrimental habits. Consequently, regular exercise stands as a foundational habit for a fulfilling life.
By providing an accessible and effective fitness platform, Calistree enables individuals to enhance their mental and physical health independently, transforming them into better individuals capable of having a positive impact on their environment.
What should our readers know about your business?
Calistree is able to help people in ways that others can’t. This unique impact is best reflected in testimonials like this one:
“The best app I have ever used to get me into shape. I have tried other games/videos/gyms. Nothing really made me consistent or showed me gains. I never workout and now this app has gotten me to workout 3 times a week.” (Justin, October 19, 2023)
Calistree was conceived with a simple vision: to organize calisthenics exercises to help users easily identify the exercises necessary to achieve their fitness goals. Realizing this vision demanded relentless effort and the enthusiastic support of hundreds of users. At times, I contemplated abandoning it due to perceived lack of progress. But the ongoing encouragement from users sustained the project until it reached a point where it could effectively serve most people.
Another challenge was actually learning how to build a mobile app from scratch. When I began working on Calistree, I had no knowledge of app development, necessitating a comprehensive learning process. Over time, my enthusiasm for programming and product design grew, and I quickly acquired the skills needed to make mobile apps. This eventually became my full-time job, supporting me while I continued developing Calistree.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the most attractive things about Raleigh for me are the many parks: whether it’s a jog around Lake Johnson, a fitness circuit in Bond park, a trail run in Umstead, or slack-lining in Dorothea Dix park, there are many possibilities to enjoy the outside without leaving the city.
TRC climbing gym is also a great place to have fun while climbing walls and meet like-minded people practicing handstands and calisthenics.
The Greenways network is a very nice way to go around the city and some long tracks make for wonderful bicycle excursions, such as the Falls of Neuse greenway or the Tobacco trail that goes all way to Durham.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Calistree owes its existence and growth to its users. Since its inception, even in its basic form, users recognized the app’s uniqueness and provided crucial encouragement and suggestions for improvement. Their unwavering support energized me during periods of slow progress, and their suggestions illuminated the path the product needed to take. It’s their collective help that has propelled Calistree forward during its four-year journey of development.
I also owe a debt of gratitude to my dear friend, Imari Colon, a Kungfu teacher in Raleigh, NC, who has been my steadfast support from the beginning. During moments of imbalance caused by excessive work, she guided me back on track and even came up with the name “Calistree.”
