Meet Alisha Thomas | Wait. What? Consulting and Bookkeeping

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alisha Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alisha, how do you think about risk?
I am not a risk taker and generally think of myself as a rule follower. BUT I believe in order to be successful in life or business you have to do things outside of your comfort zone and take risks. It’s important to really trust your gut. The problem is my gut always wants to play it safe, so I have to work to really dig deep and think – Am I scared because it’s new or because it’s wrong? Something like hiring my first employee – I know I needed a team to grow but I was worried about the upfront cost and letting go of things. In the end, hiring Erin was the best “risk” I ever took and she has helped Wait. What? grow so much!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m Alisha Thomas, the owner of Wait. What. Consulting. We make your bookkeeping pretty. We do bookkeeping and consulting for creatives, like designers and photographers.
I have a formal degree in art and design and an informal degree in small creative business, which I gained while heading up finance, operations, and logistics for a successful gift company that went on to sell in Target, Walmart, and Bed Bath & Beyond and 1,000 other retailers. I never in a million years would have thought that I would be in the accounting world, but here we are. Along the way I’ve worked with a team of magical accountants and CPAs that helped me gain the love of numbers and the understanding of how small business works.
We offer :
Outsourced Bookkeeping
Quickbooks Courses
Consulting
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have lived in Wilmington, NC for almost 20 years! It has grown so much!! If someone new is visiting and we are downtown, Seabird for dinner is always a treat. Cocktails are Earnest Money is a fun way to end the night. Edge of Urge for local shopping and fun gifts. Oh and Fuzzy Needle for music and book lovers.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Erin Coffin, Wait. What? employee #1 has been so many things more than employee. She’s a friend, a creative and motivator. I feel honored to work with her everyday!
Drewe and Kate Branding Co – they have done all our photography and website since the beginning and made Wait. What? stand out in the crowd.
