We had the good fortune of connecting with Zoe Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zoe, what’s your definition for success?
I learned over time, that if I am happy and not stressed then I consider myself successful. I have been in jobs where I have made good money, but was very unhappy and stressed all the time. Now, I work two jobs (it used to be three), make okay money and I am not stressed a bit. I am able to pay my bills, grow my business, and continue to do the things I enjoy.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I graduated with my Bachelors in Gerontology and then continued on to receive my Masters in Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Sports Management. I have worked in Senior Centers most of my life, then once COVID-19 happened I changed careers and became a 911 dispatcher. I opened my bookstore online when I was working full-time at a Senior Center and part-time as a 911 dispatcher, so the balance was rough in the beginning. I had to figure out how to manage everything and maintain my social life. As the store continued to grow, I decided to leave my part-time job and while it was scary to lose that guaranteed income I am so happy that I did. Over the last year, I have learned that you have to put yourself first. You can always make more money, but you will never get the chance to make certain memories again. If your mental health isn’t good, your business and life won’t excel.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Downtown Wilson has really grown and continues to do so! I would take them to all the local, small businesses and the Whirligig park!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom has been my biggest supporter! When I went to her with the crazy idea of starting an online bookstore, she said okay and helped me with the name, the logo, and things I would need to do. When I obtained my storefront, she helped me with cleaning books, entering inventory, running the store, and anything else she could to help out. She has always supported me but also helped keep me grounded. I have so many ideas and want to jump into them, but she talks me through things and makes sure I am not running before I can walk.
