We had the good fortune of connecting with Willis Buie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Willis, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Giving up is not an option. Why even start if you’re going to give up if it doesn’t move in the exact way you thought it would? Who knows what you’re missing out on.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It’s been 15 years and I still am just as excited to DJ for people as I was when I first started. It’s who I am through and through. When I open up a dance floor, it’s like the start of a race and I’m off and running. It’s an immediate burst of energy, joy and elation I can’t really put into words. It’s a dope feeling that only gets better every year.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m in Durham, NC and there’s such a wide variety of places to eat, I’d give you 15 places just off the top of my head. Too many historic areas to visit, places to hike, like along the Eno River. My favorite place, hands down, is The Carolina Theater. I’m a movie head and the fact they show all kinds of films, but also a huge series of older movies I grew up on, is a huge plus!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have met too many people in different aspects of this business who have been instrumental to my success. I’d dedicate this to all my vendor friends who took the time out to give some very useful advice along the way. I think everyone going into business for themselves should read Atomic Habits by James Clear. You’ll see how major changes aren’t necessary. It’s the small changes and behaviors that develop you and ultimately your business into becoming successful. Another book would be The Alchemist. A great read to let you know your end result in the beginning of your journey may not be what is best for you, so let life be life and ride the wave while staying diligent in your main purpose.
