Meet Vi Sankarlingam | Earring maker & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Vi Sankarlingam and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vi, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
One of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read was ‘Flowers for Algernon’ (Daniel Keyes). It has some very profound commentary on what it means to be intelligent, and maybe even human. I’ve always been very academically strong, so reading Flowers for Algernon really broadened my view of my knowledge and how inconsequential it is in the grand scheme of things. At the end of the day, we’re all people trying to further ourselves by all means; I realized after reading the book that it’s the idea that we aren’t perfect yet that ails us all, not the pursuit itself. Flowers of Algernon pushed me to diversify my learning and enjoy the very little (comparatively) knowledge I did have—if you haven’t already, I suggest you pick it up!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m Vi (AppleofmyVi) and I make handmade earrings! I think what makes me so special is that I take handmade quite literally. Other than the crude materials (wire, clay, stones) that I use, everything is formed and shaped by me. I also love coming up with designs inspired by my love for nature, which I think makes my art appropriate for all occasions. Although I make simpler designs to save time occasionally, I’m especially proud of my intricate metalwork; it takes forever but it always turns out so classy!
I’ve gotten to where I am right now through a lot of word of mouth and putting myself out there at markets and events. Having a tough start means a lot of doubt—doubt about funds, about your work, about your brand. It’s hard when you go to your first event and try to sell things because there will always be people who compliment you but decide not to buy anything. It happens a lot and it can hurt your ego a lot, so it’s important to remember that not everybody has been through what you have with your art. These experiences are humbling but it makes the payout so much more worth it.
What I want the world to know most about me is that I will be happy whether or not they decide to engage and buy something from me. Just a look my way means I’m doing something right and that I’ve differentiated myself from the mob. So if you can, consider checking my socials or hop by any events I’m at!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a bit of a homebody, but I’m also a raging foodie. I absolutely love visiting boba stores; my favorites so far are SipCha and KungFu Tea. My mum and I also love visiting cafes in the area. Some of the best that we’ve found so far are the Dulce Cafe near Southpoint and Cafe Soul Cups. If you’re looking for a nice dinner outside, I strongly recommend Maggiano’s Little Italy or Sushi Iwa Morrisville. Because I love to cook, I think everyone should visit the Fresh International Market in Raleigh—the groceries are incredibly diverse and cheap, the food court’s bao buns are to DIE for, and they’re right next to an amazing bakery.
In terms of experiences, I strongly recommend visiting the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, specifically during BugFest! There are so many cool booths and specimens up and even artisans selling bug-related art! I often volunteer there, so if you ever pop by feel free to say hi! I also love the Purr Cup Cafe—if you’re a cat lover and also love coffee, this place is a MUST VISIT! If you’re looking for great ambience and vibes, Cary Downtown Park and the library are such a nice place to hang out, feel the breeze, and admire the water fountain (great spots for pictures too!). The Cary Arts Center is also within walking distance; they have great classes and events year-round! The NC Museum of Art is also a wonderful place to see great art. During the summer, they have great artisan fairs and even outdoor movie showings if you catch them at the right time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mum—she’s the one who’s always enabling me behind the scenes. Whether it’s by sending my inspiration or modelling my earrings, she’s always eager to help because she sees how happy it makes me. I couldn’t do a thing without her constant support and affirmation.
