Meet Vama Shah | Model and Actress

We had the good fortune of connecting with Vama Shah and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vama, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
What makes me happy is the joy of connecting with others, whether through meaningful conversations with friends or engaging in community activities. I find immense fulfillment in pursuing my passions, such as exploring new ideas, creating, and learning something new every day. Nature also brings me happiness; spending time outdoors, whether it’s a walk in the park or a hike in the mountains, it helps me feel grounded and rejuvenated. Additionally, I find joy in helping others, whether through small acts of kindness or volunteering, as it creates a sense of purpose and connection. Ultimately, a blend of relationships, personal growth, and gratitude for the little things in life fuels my happiness.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art, as a model and actress, is centered around the idea of storytelling through visual and performance mediums. What sets me apart from others is my commitment to inclusivity and the belief that creative expression should be a platform for all voices, particularly those that are often underrepresented. I’m especially passionate about bringing visibility to the South Asian and Indian communities, where creative careers can sometimes be seen as unconventional or taboo. My work is driven by a desire to break down those barriers and show that diverse representation in the arts is not only important but necessary.
One of the things I’m most proud of is my growing ability to convey emotions in front of the camera. Whether I’m modeling or acting, I’ve developed the skills to express a wide range of feelings and narratives. This ability didn’t come easily—it took years of practice, self-reflection, and a lot of trial and error. But with each project, I’ve become more confident and capable in my craft, which is something that excites me because I know there’s always room for growth and evolution.
My journey to where I am today has certainly had its challenges. Breaking into the industry at a young age, after being signed by an agency at 14, was both exciting and intimidating. I started with photoshoots and musical theatre in high school, and while I loved every minute of it, there were times when I doubted myself or felt the weight of judgment from others. Being a South Asian woman in the modeling and acting world, I faced skepticism and criticism, particularly from my community. Pursuing a creative career in an environment where it wasn’t fully supported came with its own set of challenges, but I knew this path was where I was meant to be.
To overcome these obstacles, I focused on my purpose—using my platform to inspire and empower other South Asian girls who might feel the same pressures. I reminded myself that it’s not just about succeeding for myself; it’s about opening doors for others. I’ve learned the importance of resilience, staying true to your passion, and trusting in your abilities even when the journey feels tough. Another key lesson is the value of authenticity. People connect with realness, and by embracing who I am and what I stand for, I’ve been able to build a brand that resonates with others.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that I’m here to make a difference. My work is crafted with intention, especially to help brown girls succeed and feel confident in pursuing their own creative outlets, no matter the judgment or barriers they face. I want my story to be a source of encouragement for anyone who feels like they’re going against the grain—your dreams are valid, and your voice deserves to be heard. Through my modeling, acting, and creative expression, I aim to celebrate diversity, push boundaries, and contribute to a world where inclusivity is the norm, not the exception.
Ultimately, my journey is ongoing, and I’m excited to continue growing as an artist and as a person. Each project I take on is an opportunity to tell a new story, to inspire someone else, and to push the boundaries of what’s possible in my field. I hope that through my work, I can encourage others to embrace their creativity and pursue their passions fearlessly.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Chapel Hill, NC for a week, I’d kick things off with a stroll down Franklin Street, the heart of Chapel Hill, where we’d explore eclectic shops, cafes, and local boutiques. We’d grab coffee and pastries at Caffe Driade, a hidden gem tucked in the woods, offering a serene start to the day. Then, we’d head over to the UNC Chapel Hill campus, where we’d explore the historic quad, visit the Old Well for good luck, and check out the Ackland Art Museum. For lunch, I’d take them to Root’s Natural Kitchen, followed by a relaxing afternoon at the North Carolina Botanical Garden, where we could enjoy nature and take some great photos. In the evening, we’d dine at Lantern, a renowned restaurant that blends Asian flavors with Southern ingredients, and then catch some live music at Cat’s Cradle, a legendary venue in nearby Carrboro. The rest of the week would be filled with more local favorites: brunch at Breadmen’s, hiking at the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, shopping at Southern Season, and perhaps a day trip to the nearby towns of Durham or Hillsborough. Each day would be a mix of dining at local spots like Al’s Burger Shack and Crook’s Corner, exploring arts and culture at the Morehead Planetarium or the Nasher Museum, and just soaking in the vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that makes Chapel Hill so special.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to my 7th grade history teacher, Corey Barringer, for his unconditional support and encouragement.
