We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My entire thought process behind becoming a freelance artist was catalyzed by taking inspiration from the narratives and histories surrounding global black culture. My disposition comes from my historically fueled personal past of being homeschooled by my mother who would take her time making sure I understood social concepts and constructs around me. This better equipped me to make decisions for myself based on the environment around me and its own contextual history when doing anything. Whether it be making art in the form of pottery, grand-scale drawing or media. I want to use my knowledge to introduce conversation within society around the history of depicting black culture and what influences it may have had, good or bad.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m most proud of my dedication to getting a professional education in Art History and Fine Arts Practices, I feel that it aligns my creative perspectives with artists that come before me. It was no easy journey, and it still isn’t within the present. Though through collaboration and learning from those around and who come before me I am able to understand that perseverance is all apart of a process of self discovery and honing one’s craft. I want the world to understand that my work is contextually studied before its creation, making it relevant to social narratives that are surrounding black cultural existence.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going to box car in Raleigh, always ale to play some games that I enjoy ad get good food from the location in Greensboro.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shenette Swann has been one of my main supporters throughout this entire process of me forming a career, as well as my great group of friends within community. Some of the people I meet at my college have had a profpund impact on my life and my creational tendencies.
