Meet Sophia Munson | Attorney

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophia Munson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophia, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
Because the core of the Munson Law Firm’s business is estate planning, I think it’s entirely appropriate that I address what I’d like my legacy to be. Professionally, as a lawyer who focuses on estate planning, my goal is to leave a lasting impact on the community by ensuring that families feel secure and supported, even when they can no longer provide for their loved ones. Through our services, I aspire to bring peace of mind and compassion to my clients when difficult decisions need to be made, so that even more difficult decisions don’t need to be made by their loved ones later, without the benefit of knowing what they would have wanted.
On a personal level, I want to be remembered as someone who put their family first, and who cared deeply about others. Whether it was the colleagues I worked alongside, the clients I served, or the causes for which I fought, my passion is rooted in kindness, equality, and empathy. I strive to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me, focused on a steadfast commitment to the well-being of others.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

We know the legal challenges you face.
The heart of our business is family, and the legal challenges that arise for a family. We’ll help you plan for the care and protection of your children and assets; launch or expand your business; manage the death of a loved one; and make an important career transition – just to name a few.
If we are not your expert, we help you find one.
We value our relationships, both with you and with our vetted network of referral firms. As your trusted legal advisor, we will strive to connect you with the resources that can best assist your unique situation.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. In your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?
You are inspiring me to make this happen! A perfect day in Pittsboro, NC with my best friend would start with breakfast at Verlie’s or Phoenix Bakery, a leisurely stroll through the charming downtown area, hitting up French Connections to see what treasures we could find. We would then head over to Circle City Books and remember what it was like before kids when we could read uninterrupted with a glass of wine and a pair of fuzzy socks. Despite it being a day about girlfriends, I know I wouldn’t be able to resist the chance to look at Pittsboro Toys.
Speaking of wine, we would probably stop by the Fearrington House Inn and have a glass. Next, we’d venture head over to the Spa at Bell House for a hot stone massage. All this shopping and relaxing would work up an appetite so we would hit the Belted Goat for the best chicken salad sandwich and cookies.
Since my bestie hasn’t been to visit yet, I’d definitely want to show her Kiwanis Park to not only see the infamous turtle sculpture, but to walk off lunch before getting ready for a wonderful dinner. We’d undoubtedly need coffee to fuel up, so I’m sure I could twist her arm to head to Breakaway Cafe for a delicious mocha or chai tea.
Feeling pretty good about ourselves for powering through the day, we’d definitely head over to Postal Fish Company to feast on the oysters, hush puppies and ricotta dumplings, and toast to a day spent full of fun, friends and food.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
This is a much harder question to answer than I anticipated. I recently read the book Unleashing Your Hero by Kevin Brown. This book challenges the reader to inspire others and to use their talents to make a positive difference in the lives of those they interact with each day. I am so many things to so many people. A wife. A mother. A daughter. A friend. A boss. A colleague. A trusted business advisor. Each of these roles are unique and present their own challenges and rewards. This book reminds me that by making the people in my life feel important and feel heard, I can spread kindness and dignity in a way that takes just a little bit of effort but makes an immeasurable impact.
In this vein, I am committed to my role as advocate for and co-founder of the Chatham County School Safety Coalition. This coalition is dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment for students, teachers, and staff within our schools. By listening to the issues and fostering collaboration between educators, law enforcement and community members (to name a few), we work toward implementing initiatives to protect our children ensure their well-being.
Last, but certainly not least, I would also certainly be remiss if I did not give a shout out to my partner in life and in work, Mike Munson. Mike and I were married in November 2013, and every few years our anniversary falls on Thanksgiving. It is so special when this happens because “thankful” is the best word I can use to describe our relationship. Thankful to have found a partner who challenges me, who celebrates me, who weathers the storms of trips to the ER with our rambunctious kiddos with me, who enjoys the smell of salt in the air and sand under my feet with me, who may roll his eyes at some of my ideas but who in the end believes in me more than I sometimes believe in myself. This year, we celebrated 10 years of marriage and renewed our vows. Simply put, he makes every moment brighter and more meaningful.
