Meet Shaquanda Harrison

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaquanda Harrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaquanda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own hair business was rooted in both passion and purpose. I’ve been doing hair since I was 12 years old, and over time, it became more than just a skill it became a part of who I am. I saw how much confidence and joy people felt after getting their hair done, especially when it came to locs and natural styles that truly celebrate our identity and culture.
As I got older, I realized that working for someone else would limit how far I could go and how many people I could impact. I wanted the freedom to create, to build something that reflected my values, and to offer a space where clients feel seen, respected, and educated about their hair. I also wanted to create opportunities through classes, products, and services that empower others in the natural hair community.
Starting my own business wasn’t just about making money; it was about walking in my purpose, taking control of my future, and helping others do the same.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career as a loc stylist and natural hair specialist has truly been a journey of growth, faith, and purpose. I started doing hair at just 12 years old not because I had to, but because I genuinely loved it. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a calling. Over the years, I developed my skills, studied my craft, and focused on helping people embrace the beauty of their natural hair especially through locs, which are a powerful expression of identity and culture.
What sets me apart is my attention to detail, the personal care I give each client, and the spiritual energy I bring into my work. For me, doing hair isn’t just about the style it’s about the experience, the transformation, and the healing. I’ve built my brand on integrity, education, and empowerment. I take time to educate my clients on proper loc care and maintenance, and I make sure they leave my chair feeling better inside and out.
Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. There were seasons of self-doubt, financial struggle, and personal loss including the passing of my mother and son. But I leaned into my faith, stayed focused on my vision, and reminded myself that my gift was bigger than any obstacle I faced. Every challenge taught me something patience, resilience, and the importance of consistency.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that this isn’t just business—it’s ministry. Chozyn By God isn’t just a name, it’s a declaration. I’m here to serve, to uplift, and to remind people that they were fearfully and wonderfully made. Whether it’s through a retwist, a style, or a word of encouragement, my goal is to leave a lasting impact.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without a doubt, I want to dedicate this shoutout to my late mother and my late son. They’ve both had a powerful impact on who I am and why I do what I do.
My mother was my first example of strength, resilience, and grace. She believed in me even when I didn’t fully believe in myself. Her love and support laid the foundation for my confidence and my work ethic. I carry her spirit with me in everything I do especially in how I treat my clients and how I show up for my business.
My son is my reason, my motivation, and my daily reminder of purpose. Though he’s no longer here with me physically, he inspires me to keep pushing forward, to create a legacy, and to make every moment count. Everything I build, I build with him in mind.
Their memories fuel my passion, and their love continues to guide me every step of the way.
