We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanta Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shanta, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was raised by my mother as well as my grandparents.  As my grandparents aged, I watched my mother, and her siblings become their caregivers. As an adult, although I no longer live in the same vicinity as my family, I am part of my grandparent’s caregiving circle.

When I was young, I learned to value and respect older adults. Respect for older adults was a vital part of my upbringing.  I enjoyed engaging with them because they passed along their wisdom which gave me the resilience I have today.  I also enjoyed listening to their personal experiences and stories. I would ask questions, envisioning their stories in my head, and learning to see their perspective.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a therapist focused on providing teletherapy to older adults and caregivers. Older adults are frequently overlooked in our society. I enjoy hearing their stories of resilience, past and future milestones, and lifetime memories.

I have slowly built my private practice to balance my work and family life. I have learned that my family and I will not get another ME! That is why I promote self-care and boundaries for myself and my clients. I try my best not to be a hypocrite so I practice what I preach to others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Any restaurant with good food! I am a foodie all day!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is to my mother. Without her, I would not be who I am or where I am today. She taught me love, independence, and strength. My mother never doubted me in any of my pursuits. She is no longer with us, but I know she was proud of me in all aspects of my personal and professional life.

My next shoutout is to my family. When my parents divorced, my grandparents stepped in without hesitation, helping my mother and I establish a new life in a single parent household. We also received support from my mother’s siblings. This is my foundation.  Because of my family, I had a nurturing and happy childhood. I am passing my family traditions and values along to my daughters.
