Meet Shanice Ruffin | Mental Health Therapist and Social Work/Family Support Professional

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanice Ruffin.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am Shanice Ruffin, a native of Goldsboro, North Carolina. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Grief Counselor. Although I am a therapist, I am very introverted. In my spare time, I enjoy being alone with my favorite blanket, candles, and Netflix.
What does your therapist journey look like?
I obtained my Bachelor of Social Work Degree and Master of Social Work degree from the illustrious Fayetteville State University (BRONCO PRIDE!). Following obtaining my degrees, I
received my provisional license to practice therapy in 2020 and became fully licensed in 2023.
Why did you come back to your hometown to practice therapy?
Growing up in Goldsboro, I did not have the luxury of having a therapist that looked like me. I feel that there is an urgent need for black mental health therapists in our community and I want
to help fulfill that need.
What is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is intrinsic motivation. Many people underestimated and doubted me often. With my determination and the Lord’s guidance, I have
been able to set goals for myself and achieve them.
What were some challenges you faced during your journey?
Fear and rejection. I was fearful of failing and became discouraged when I was rejected. I used both as learning opportunities.
Do you have a favorite quote or affirmation? What does it mean to you? What do you like about it?
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” -Jeremiah 29:11
This is my favorite scripture, and it simply means that God has a promise for my life no matter my current circumstance.
What is one piece of advice you have for upcoming mental health therapists?
• Do not let imposter syndrome win. You are exactly where you belong.
• Always be your authentic self. Clients can tell a fake person from a mile away.
• Never stop learning!
