We had the good fortune of connecting with Rick DeMattos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rick, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As Bulletproof grew through the success of the sauces, I was out of whack with my work life balance. I became more mindful of my personal time this year. I took a weekend a month for myself whether it was a weekend getaway or doing something around town. It’s very all consuming, researching product prices, label design, marketing, etc.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My sauces are made with wholesome, easily pronounced ingredients, they taste fresh, bright, and clean. I still marvel at the customer comments whether they are a returning customer or a new one. We do have some trouble getting ingredients occasionally and if I can’t get a specific product I’ll hold off and make the product unavailable. Consistency is key, we must deliver what the customer expects time after time.
I’ve been cooking up the sauces and working craft markets for over three years and I still get excited.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We have a lot of breweries in Raleigh and the surrounding area. It would be easy to hit a couple a day for a week and not exhaust the lost. The area is seeing a growth in ethnic restaurants, Ethiopian, Indian, Indonesian, and Caribbean. It’s fun to check these places out and see the similarities and differences in the food preparation. Day trips to the beach or mountains are not out the question as both are a few hours away in either direction.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people I could give a shout out and I appreciate all of their support. Just recently I had a conversation with a random person and it turned out she had my sauce in her pantry. I asked her if she had picked it up a craft market it so happens she saw it on the shelf at a brick and mortar store. She proceeded to tell me that the labeling caught her eye so she pickled it up and read the description on the back label and gave it a chance. My shout out goes to Jessica LaGuardia because I get so many compliments on the label.
