We had the good fortune of connecting with Rashaad King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rashaad, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since a young age I’ve always felt that music expressed how I felt in a way that I couldn’t put to words. Even now as an artist I feel like music can explain feelings way better than we can with mere conversation. That understanding is what drove me and continues to drive me to be creative. Making art that someone can present and say “This! This explains how I feel perfectly!!” gives me a feeling that is indescribable. Moving the spirit with creation is a blessing.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
October 31st I released my newest project “JADED:2020” which has been stewing for a little more than two years. In that time I’ve signed to management in Atlanta and moved on, traveled the country performing and recording, and have begun working on film projects. What sets me apart is my creative approach to my content/music videos. For instance Medusa the newest music video/film to drop is set at a campsite, highlighting all of the stereotypes about African Americans and our lack of camping experience. We take the time to make fun of ourselves until it turns into a thriller and mishap after mishap happens. The journey this song (and album) underwent is a story in itself. It was shelved due to lack of confidence in direction and listening to outside sources. I’m learning now, as I’ve learned throughout my whole journey, that it’s not about the destination but the journey itself. The growth I’ve been able to see in myself may not have been possible without the delay, and so I’m grateful for it! Now dusting it off, I’m excited to release this music that is NEW to the world! Never give up! Keep going!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If we’re in Charlotte we’re going to Concord Mills! If we’re in Durham I’m taking them to a show at The Fruit! If we’re in Chapel Hill I’m taking them to my favorite thrift shop “Rumors”. Any city in North Carolina I know how to have a good time!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out Blue Clay Studios, who I produced the short film Medusa through.Medusa is included on my new album JADED:2020
