Meet Phylicia N. Barker Nelson | Fashion Model & Farmer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Phylicia N. Barker Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phylicia N., can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I started my own business it was never a question about it. I come from a family of business owners. So I have my modeling business and a livestock business as well.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As people say in the country, ” oh you are a jack of all trades” and I truly am. I enjoy finding peace in happiness in all things I do. If it is the family farm, assisting with my bestie’s girls basketball team, working in the community, or connecting people to more clientele. The Journey has not been easy but, it is natural for me to do. My mom and grandma Pearlie always say “I have a presence that can shine even in a crowded room of people.” The last 10 years I’ve called myself a walking billboard; I’m always promoting someone or giving advice to another.
Honestly, the lesson learned over the course of achievements throughout the years has been to NEVER GIVE UP. I have always kept my head up and remember whose child I am. The Brand and story of Phy Barker (PhyB Nelson recently married) started on the farm going with my grandparents to conferences watching them speak. From the first moment taking photos of them at 5 years old and beyond has been history.
I truly want the world to know that beyond universe is yours; its up to you to capture your essence in it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well where I personally live it’s a spot that I have always loved it’s called George’s Family Restaurant in Oxford, NC. It is a family owned spot and I went to school with the owner’s kids. Preparing for my wedding we had a meet and greet there they loved it. If they are staying for a week then we have to pull up on my family; Big Foot0 BBQ, normally my cousin be on the smoker/grill at least two days for the community. it’s only right to get fresh NC BBQ (chicken, pork, turkey) while you are here. This is hard to say because when my In Laws or Husband’s friends come down I try to take them to the hot spots that I love. I normally make sure if people are coming to the area, it’s when my family is cooking as well. My uncles are known in the surrounding area for their food ( turkey wings, leg quarters, fried fish). We would have to hit Blaze Pizza, Dame’s Chicken & Waffles, Big C’s Waffles, First Watch, CookOut, and by far country home cooking only in Oxford, NC Family Diner.
For me honestly, I do not go out a lot I’m a family person. I go and watch my bestie coach Basketball which is very exciting. If anything I would take them to a fashion show that was in the surrounding area or Kings-Bowl North Hills, Frankie’s; other than that Downtown Durham or Raleigh.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This Shoutout is dedicated to the Gents in my life. From the beginning to now they have been my rocks.
