Meet ONICAS GADDIS | Spiritual Expressionism

We had the good fortune of connecting with ONICAS GADDIS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi ONICAS, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I was born En Caul (Google). My birth mom Mattie Pearl Walton, Author (God, My Soul Provider, 2014) told me over the phone recently about a vision she was shown during my arrival.
She told me that God had shown her that I was to grow up and become a famous artist.
I’m 48 now and I was told not to stop doing art through the spirit when I was 7. So I never stopped.
Now I’m connected to many important aspects of the history of Art.
John Holyfield (Artist)
Sarah Carlisle Towery, Artist , (Alabama Art Colony’s namesake)
Black Mountain College Museum (permanent collection)
Florida Highwaymen Artists (S.M. Wells, Uncle)
Kingdom Of Benin, Africa ((DNA)
I guess what I trying to say is I didn’t “choose” this path, it chose me.
I was born an artist.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is my heart and soul on canvas. It was definitely not easy to understand how to process pain through the process of making art. I’m excited about being included in an upcoming documentary titled Origins: Creators Of The Carolinas, airing on PBS (South Carolina) this winter. I’m sure that I got here because every brush stroke that I made was an honest one. The actual time that I spent making art is how I think I was able to overcome challenges.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along the way is watch every step you make and go your own way.
I think I want the world to see connectivity in my work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the North Carolina Museum of Art all 5 days.. This is why most people don’t want to hang with me for that long because all I do is art stuff..
🙂
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
