We had the good fortune of connecting with Omari Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Omari, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly, my process starting out was really just getting started and learning and gathering all the knowledge that was an available to me at the time. When I starting I was working a 9-5 job at Target so I already knew my time was limited, but I could still get a lot done if I focused and sacrificed more of my regular life for my business.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well my Business is called Way Too Tuft and I create Handmade custom tufted rugs made from acrylic yarn. I feel like my rugs/work is set apart from the rest of the community of tufting mainly because it come directly from me so everything is 1 of 1 and I have my own unique attention to detail that others may not see or care about. Also my confidence in my work as well sets me apart from others which allows me to motivate other to want to create like me and now I teach for free weekly with my own discord community. As far as getting to where I am today I’d say consistency is really key to everything I have going right now I’m not as consistent as I want to be at time but I’m always moving and making something happen so that’s been working out most for me and just keeping a positive mindset and developing my patience and my self everyday. Was it easy… definitely not but I listen to a lot of music so it really just makes my whole day easier. All year i’ve been getting more into 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s music so you can say I’m really just jamming through any situation lol. The main lesson I’ve learned so far along the way is that im always doing the right thing and everything happens for a reason so just have faith and keep god close. I just want the world to know that I’m not even close to my destination but I know exactly when I’m going and I’m having fun and laughing the whole way there.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Im not really a bar person but we’d probably just go out to do something fun like Drive shack or bowling and just go out to eat and some places we’ve never been too. I like experiencing new things so the whole week we might just look up new things to do. I don’t really plan to much I like everything organic and just staying in the moment that how you really make memories.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thought out my journey tufting and with my business Detroit music has really been an essential part to my story! I’m really a music oriented person but Detroit music really gets me in that mode and I’ve always been confident and motivated so there music really just flows with the mindset I already have. I definitely want to shout out my Mom and Dad of course for just giving me the gift of life and never forcing me or my brother to do anything we didn’t really want to do. And Shout out my friend Tiff she’s been a big help giving me books and advice and helping me manifest and dream big.
