We had the good fortune of connecting with Mina Brower and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mina, why did you pursue a creative career?
I began writing fiction because my post-partum therapist suggested I journal my feelings. I had just given birth and I was coming to terms with a lot of feelings around previous struggles with infertility and loss and then the fast rush of emotions of having a viable pregnancy and giving birth. Writing during post-partum allowed me to have fun with writing and allowed my mind to not only process my feelings but create the novel that I eventually published. Writing was always a passion of mine and it led me to pursue a career in law to begin with. However, as a partner in my law firm, my day to day is very regimented. Legal writing has a very specific, almost codified, style to it. I specialize in appeals work and although my writing is persuasive, its very formal.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Mexican immigrant who is an equity partner at my law firm and a published author- that right there is what sets me apart from other writers today. Full-time law partners and authors don’t get to experience both of these careers successfully at the same time. Not only am I at the top of my legal profession but I also strive for the best in my writing because of my rigorous law background. The legal mindset of you have to be the best and give everything you do your all applies to writing. When my debut book, A God of Moonlight and Stardust, received an incredible review from the prestigious Kirkus Reviews and received an Editor’s Pick from Booklife Reviews, which is owned by Publisher’s Weekly I was over the moon. On top of that, my debut book was selected to be on the Best Books of 2024 print editions of Kirkus Reviews Magazine and Publisher’s Weekly. I’m excited for my book’s sequel, An Heir of Darkness and Ruin, to come out in June of 2025 so I can continue living out this writing journey.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My husband spent his childhood summers deep sea fishing with his Navy retired uncle in Myrtle Beach and southern North Carolina. I’ve had the privilege to visit both states with him and I find them to be one of the most beautiful states in this country. When we are in NC we love heading over to Sunset Beach.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shout to my mother and my husband who help me balance motherhood with my full-time law career and writing books. I would not be here without them.
I would like to thank Molly Tullis, my family friend who is also an author. She has published an impressive 11 book catalogue and she has been an incredible cheerleader and helps me keep going.
