Meet Miles Carter | Portrait Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Miles Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miles, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
During my early college days, I had a hard time finding a career path that suited me. So much so that it made me switch my major twice before finally deciding to pursue what I do today. I remember the days of feeling stressed out because of my uncertainty. I kept asking myself “what am I here for? What’s my true purpose?” I found those answers by looking through my past. I grew up around creative people that inspired me to express my ideas in different ways. Whether it was sketching my name in graffiti with various font styles or snapping a photo of whatever caught my eye. Once I realized the missing piece to the puzzle was there all along, I went head over heels to become an artists.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m very proud of the projects I was able to create and be a part of in 2024. One specifically is my project called “A Charming Duality.” This came about with the help of many talented individuals working in different fields to bring the idea to life. It essentially was to capture an edgy yet minimal portraits in an editorial style. The ultimate goal for this project was to get into the habit of creating for magazine agencies for publication. The very first and only agency I submitted to thus far accepted my submission within 24 hrs.
It was definitely challenging to get to where I am today. I’ve battled things like creative block, overwhelming stress, seasonal depression, and self doubt; a few common experiences for most creatives. But with help from my parents, my old college professors, friends and my mentor, I have established myself as an artist in portrait photography. The knowledge from these individuals and my adversities have taught me the art of patience, self love, and self respect. It has been me vs. me so I consistently have to remind myself that I have been blessed with the eyes to see the vision and the hands to bring it to life at its’ highest quality possible. Another lesson I’ve learned is how to be true to self in a world full of others with similar talents. There’s always another me, but that person will never be me. My photography is meant to showcase how unique my point of view is as well as shine light on the beauty of my generation.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a nature boy at heart and usually my best friend would be as well, so a good daytime activity we are doing is going for a walk! Something about walking in the outdoors, breathing in the fresh air and disconnecting from the cyber world is my favorite way to relax, reset, and establish the energy for their visit. Lucky there are multiple lakes and parks in the area that would allow us to truly do so. Somewhere along the line we would do some drawing or painting at a unique spot like the NC Museum of Art. We most likely would go to downtown Raleigh to grab a bite at the Morgan Street Food Hall. A place with a variety of food and drinks. During the night, we may hunt for a good lounge to chill and listen to some good music. Before it suffered from fire damage, one of my go to spots was House of Art. They always had each room designed with amazing themes, you would meet at least a good handful of exciting new people, and the energy would be through the roof with the tunes played by the DJs.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a multitude of people I would love to shoutout but I would specifically like to dedicate this to my mentor J ‘Slim’ Robertson aka “The Slim Creative”.
