Meet Michael Patterson | Abstract painter and video producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
In 2014 I began painting while continuing my video production career of nearly 25 years. As painting transitioned from hobby to profession I tuned the craft, growing, challenging myself to evolve. Becoming a painter later in life forced me to project new challenges inorganically. I felt my growth had to accelerate to make up for the lost time, the days I neglected the voice in my head to work the canvas. Earlier the phrase artist conjured images I wasn’t ready to accept until my work began evolving. Meaning, rarely did a single style command my studio time. for long I wanted to grow, especially remembering a comment I made during art school “imagine us here in our 20’s where will our art be in our 70s.” So in my late 50s a painter I became, a pusher of color, bound by the cold, thick, acidic smelling muck of paint. I felt at home, seduced by large sweeping swaths of cotton duct.. An artist? Who knows? My drawing is suspect, embarrassingly so, I don’t build three D and lack the whimsical. I paint. I like it. Days pass, and work stacks in corners and hallways, so where and how much becomes accomplished is unknown but the infinite enjoyment of the challenge will shoulder me onward to the end.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Painting is a personal joy and challenge for me. I review other painter’s work at galleries/online for ideas, dissecting styles and to admire many talented folks. Growth is what defines professionalism, growth is often laborious; so patience, hope and continuity should reign. Setbacks come with the territory, creatively, representational and often financially, so minutiae is expected, but those details build the will,. Where people finish isn’t as important as what lessons are learned.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thank you to all who have encouraged me, my family, fiends, patrons and those who support creatives.
