Meet Melanie Devontenno | Cake Designer & Owner of Indulge by Melanie

We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Devontenno and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melanie, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m originally from Mount Vernon, NY, and my background has shaped me into who I am today in so many meaningful ways. Growing up, I spent countless hours cooking and baking with my grandmother, Helen, who instilled in me a love for the kitchen. Baking became not just a skill but a true passion and a therapeutic outlet for me.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of having my own bakery. However, as a single mother from a young age, I had to put that dream on hold to focus on providing for my family. Despite the challenges, that dream never faded. Now, I’m thrilled to have an online bakery, which allows me to pursue my passion while continuing my full-time career in the healthcare industry.
I feel so honored to be a part of people’s celebrations, knowing I provide the sweet treats that bring them joy. That’s why the word “indulge” in my bakery’s name is so special to me, it perfectly captures the happiness and comfort I hope to bring to others.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am most proud of my ability to balance working full-time, providing for my family, and pursuing a degree for my second passion. It wasn’t always easy, but I stayed focused on my goals and learned to trust the process. I’ve always believed in hard work, perseverance, and treating others with kindness, whether in my career or my business.
As a healthcare professional, I take pride in providing exceptional care to my patients. I treat every person as if they were a beloved family member, whether it’s a mother, grandmother, cousin, or friend, because I want them to feel seen and valued. To me, they are not just a medical record number; they are individuals with unique needs, and I’m here to help in any way I can.
The journey to where I am today has been filled with challenges, but I’ve learned some invaluable lessons along the way. I’ve learned that hard work always pays off, that patience and persistence are key, and that you should never give up, even when the road seems uncertain.
Through my bakery, I strive to bring that same level of care and dedication to every order. Whether it’s two dozen cupcakes or a five-tier wedding cake, I make it a priority to exceed expectations and ensure that each customer’s vision comes to life.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is this: your dreams are never unobtainable. The journey may take longer or look different than you imagined, but with passion and determination, you can achieve anything. My story is a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and believing in the possibilities ahead.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend visited North Carolina, I’d show them the best of what the state has to offer. We’d start in Raleigh at Morgan Street Food Hall for delicious eats and drinks, then visit the NC Museum of Art for culture and stunning trails. We’d catch a basketball game at Duke (Go Duke!) and head to Asheville to tour the breathtaking Biltmore Estate. For adventure, we’d hike Grandfather Mountain, enjoy the NC State Fair in October, or ride thrilling coasters at Carowinds. North Carolina is full of incredible experiences, it is difficult to narrow down the places to go.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this love, passion, and success to my late grandmother, Helen. She was my first and greatest inspiration. Growing up with her, I spent countless hours helping collect ingredients, cooking, and baking alongside her. Those early moments sparked my lifelong love for baking and taught me the joy that comes from creating something special for others.
I also want to recognize the impact of my time working in a bakery at a local grocery store in North Carolina back in 2006. This was my first job following my move from New York. While I was initially responsible for baking cookies, pies, and bread, my journey took a significant turn when two incredible cake decorators, Cassandra, and Jaime, invited me to help them. That’s when my love for cake decorating truly began, and it’s a passion that has stayed with me ever since.
Their encouragement and my grandmother’s influence have both played vital roles in shaping my journey, and I’m forever grateful for the foundation they provided.
