We had the good fortune of connecting with Meghan Flint and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meghan, what is the most important factor behind your success?
My brand is based around family. I literally wouldn’t be “FlintFamCreates” without my own family being behind my brand.

When I started FlintFamCreates nearly two years ago, I knew I wanted to create a brand my kids and husband could be a part of. While I may be the creative force behind the brand, everyone in my family is creative in one way or another. And I was right to leave that option open—my two daughters ended up creating products with me by the time FlintFamCreates was only about six months old. First, they jumped into the business with slime. Next thing I knew, my oldest was asking to learn how to make macramé products, and my youngest wanted to create jewelry with me. Now, in 2025, kids’ accessories and sensory toys have become one of the biggest parts of our brand.

But I also know I wouldn’t have found success without my own personal story shaping our brand. Recently, I had a branding consultation with a marketing manager who encouraged me to put more of myself into my work. Her advice was just what I needed to hear because my gut had already been nudging me in that direction. Anyone can create and sell products to a general audience, but when you infuse your creations with your story and make them an extension of who you are, it transforms the experience. You’re not just building a brand or selling products; you’re creating a community—one that connects with your work on a deeper level and is positively impacted by it.

So what’s my story? I’ve always been a creative person, ever since I was a kid. But now that I’m a Mom, creativity has taken on a totally different role in my life. I’m a Mom to two girls with mental health challenges—and they get it honest; they get it from me. When my oldest was around 5 years old she was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder. Over the past five years, we’ve spent countless hours in therapy (both myself and her), playing with sensory toys, and finding coping mechanisms for ourselves. For me and my girls, being creative and creating these products is just as much therapy as it is business. Talking about mental health is still hard for many and often considered taboo. But for us, our struggles have made us stronger, and I truly believe that’s been a key factor in our success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I definitely consider myself more of a “creative” than an artist, but that’s not to say that I don’t create art.

My very first form of “art” was writing. I’ve been writing since I was a kid. As an adult, I actually started as a blogger before I turned into a creative small business owner. I think writing will always be a part of my professional career, just not in the way that I had originally hoped.

In 2023 I bought my first macrame kit. It sat for a while before I finally picked it up and started creating something. Then in the Fall of 2023 I made a small piece (I think it was a tiny pouch?), and I was hooked. I started with small pieces like keychains, bookmarks and car charms. When I started to become more comfortable, I opened an Etsy shop. I also sold locally, taking custom orders and getting some of my items into a local consignment shop. Looking back, I thought I had finally found my “thing.” But what I didn’t realize was that my brain was about to unleash a whole lot of other creative ideas I didn’t even know existed within myself.

Since then, I have spread my talents to other areas, like product design (mostly apparel), jewelry making, and sensory toys, to name a few. I also self-published a coffee journal that I wrote and designed completely on my own. In May of 2024, I made the decision to expand past Etsy, and opened my own Shopify store. It has been quite the journey!

Of course, like any journey, I have met MANY challenges along the way. Some have been personal, while others have been out of my control. For one, as a self-employed, stay-at-home Mom with a very, very small budget, I have had to learn to do a lot of things on my own. I’ve figured out how to set up my website, how to market my brand, and what not to do in a lot of situations. I’ve had to push myself every step of the way. There have been many days when I just wanted to give up, but there have been just as many days where I worked for hours and hours, completely unwilling to quit. And I’m still learning and growing each day.

It was no surprise, then, when I found out in late 2024 that I have ADHD. I think trying to start my own business, paired with the constant flow of creative ideas, really brought out that side of me. Rather than letting it hold me back, I’ve taken the time to learn about myself and what makes my brain work at its best.

All of these factors combined—the creativity, the ADHD, the perseverance—are the things that set me apart from everyone else. While many creators rely on trends, patterns, and templates to guide their work, I usually design my own original pieces straight out of my head. Trends, patterns and templates are very important (and I do research them)—don’t get me wrong—but I think it’s equally important to be original and authentically YOU when designing a product or piece of art. I try to balance both approaches in my work.

Not to toot my own horn, but I’ve always been amazed by the fact that I can look at a macrame piece and pick up the different knots and patterns without needing a tutorial. I love looking at others’ pieces and taking inspiration from them to create something entirely new and original. Yes, sometimes I do need a video or written tutorial to learn a new knot, but very rarely do I ever copy a tutorial as it is.

If I were to leave the world with one last bit of knowledge about my brand, FlintFamCreates, it would be this: Yes, we are “one crafty family making crafty things” (this is our tagline). And yes, we are a family-owned and operated business. But we are also in the business of inspiring and encouraging other families out there. We will continue to be transparent, to learn, grow, and adapt when needed so that we can always serve our Flint Fam community in the most meaningful and fulfilling ways possible.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, man! As a Charlotte-transplant, there are still so many places that I still need to visit and explore! We’ve only lived here since the Fall of 2022. But given that I have found some favorites since moving here, here is what we would do and/or where we would go:

– Discovery Place Science Museum in Downtown Charlotte: this would definitely be the place where we’d take our kids to play, learn and explore. I’ve taken my girls here so many times, and we love it!

– Amelie’s French Bakery and Cafe in South Park: this is one of my go-to spots for great pastries, good coffee and a great writing atmosphere. I’ve written some of my best blog posts while sitting here!

– Coffee shops: So I’m a BIG coffee person. A lot of my old blog content and my current accessories are centered around coffee. Some of my favorite coffee shops are Alice Jules Coffee House (Monroe, NC), KB’s Coffee (Monroe, NC), and Provisions Waxhaw (Waxhaw, NC). There are so many others that I could name, but these stick out in my head first!

– Shopping: If I were taking my friend shopping for kids clothes and special gifts/finds, I would take them to Dandelion Children’s Consignment in Monroe, NC. As a vendor here, I know first hand that there are so many cute, unique, locally made items in the vendor shop/section of the store! I also have found many great clothing pieces and other items for my kids here. Another shop I would take them to is Peddlers Paradise Bartique. The owner is super nice, and the atmosphere is so cool! It’s a bar meets vendor shop with hundreds of unique items to shop. I could spend hours in there looking around!

– Restaurants: Our family is a big fan of a few local restaurants. We’re homebodies, so most of the time we’re ordering take out from these places, but they’re still really good. Our favorites? Hacienda El Rey for Mexican food, The Improper Pig for American bites, Tickle My Ribs for when we want BBQ and Be’s Noodles & Banh Mi for our Asian fix.

Like I said, living just outside of Charlotte, NC means that there’s TONS of places to go and see. I’ve only lived here for a little over two years, and I have my own bucket list of places to go!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I could probably create a long list of people that have influenced and supported my journey over the years. But for the sake of simplicity, I would love to give a shoutout to my husband, Carl, and my two daughters. Everything that I have done over the last two years has been because of them and thanks to them. There would be no FlintFamCreates, no motivation, no reason to persevere without them.

I think my therapist deserves a shoutout, too. Without her guidance and encouragement, I probably wouldn’t be able to continue to push myself to be a better version of me. Starting and growing your own business is HARD. Sometimes those inner voices and self-doubts can be the final breaking point for an entrepreneur. Having a great therapist in my corner has been such a great thing.
