Meet Megan Williams | Wedding Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what do you attribute your success to?
To begin, I think the word success means something different for everyone. To me success is being happy in what you do and proud of the work you produce. Success is being able to do what you love and having joy within that. I think the most important factor behind my success is the heart behind what I do. My goal is not to just create a film that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and “wow’s” everyone who watches it. That is a piece of my goal, but the main goal is to create a film that places the couple back into their wedding day. I want them to watch my films and feel like they are reliving that day. I want to create a sentimental, nostalgic film that evokes true emotions. The couples that hire me see that within my films and I believe that plays a factor into my success and what I offer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a wedding videographer based in Eastern North Carolina. There are many other videographers in the industry around me, just like with any other job field. One thing that sets me apart is my desire to create a film that places the couple back in their wedding day, not just a movie trailer. I always ask my couples the top three moments they care most about on their day. I use this to get a feel for what matters most to them, and emphasize/ highlight those moments more in their film.
I am most excited about a couple of my upcoming mountain weddings. I absolutely love the mountains and cannot wait to capture more weddings there! From the mountains, to the coast, NC is a beautiful place to live to capture such breathtaking weddings.
I did not get to where I am in my business overnight. My first 25 weddings I charged under $800. This would include all day filming, a highlight film, and raw ceremony. I worked very hard for very little in the end when I first began my business. I started with one handycam on a tripod for my first few weddings, only charging a few hundred dollars. Everyone must start somewhere, and that was my start. As I filmed more, and made more money, I invested in better equipment. I didn’t go to school for videography. I learned by doing and just got better with each wedding. Over the past few years I have invested in much nicer equipment, expanded my filming abilities, grew in my editing skills, and obtained my drone pilot license. I lived by the quote “you don’t have to be good to start, but you have to start to be good.” I was not good when I started, but the more I have done it, the more I have grown in my skills and abilities.
I want the world to know that this a business built to preserve memories in a special way. This is not just a job to me. I invest so much into each couple and their wedding day. It is so important to me that every special moment is captured to the best of my ability and placed into a sentimental film they can cherish forever. I love what I do, and I believe that makes a huge difference in the product that is produced.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am from Clinton, a smaller town in North Carolina. If I had a best friend visiting the area from out of town I would take them to Alfredo’s for dinner and finish with ice cream from Dairy Queen. To end the night I would gather together a group of friends and finish with a game night playing thirteens and spinners at the house!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout my husband and family for their unwavering support. My husband, Austin, was one of my main motivators in starting this business. He saw how happy I was filming weddings, and encouraged me when I decided to go full time with the business. Any time I have doubted myself or my work I would show it to my mom or sisters and they would always encourage me or give constructive feedback. For that I am grateful. I have an amazing support system that constantly hypes me up in what I do. I love you guys and cannot thank you enough!
