Meet Megan Clark | Jewelry Designer and Goldsmith

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have found happiness in art for as long as I can remember. I spent a lot of time drawing as a kid, and a lot of time at the Durham Arts Council. I became interested in fashion in high school, and specifically interested in pattern making which led to a scholarship to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design where I discovered metals as a medium. It never felt like a conscious decision; In a lot of ways it feels like it found me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Jewelry is a field that is hard to find an individual voice in, for many reasons, but the largest being that it is an industry as well. I think the thing that sets my work apart, and where I have really found my voice is in caring about the details. A huge factor in my aesthetic is the time I take on finishing the piece; My work is quiet until you have looked at it for a while.
Art is definitely not the easiest field to enter, and certainly not the easiest to stay in. Being able to respond to feedback and adapt is incredibly important. So is staying true to your passion for it – if you stop caring you’re done. It is a roller coaster, but I haven’t wanted to get off the ride yet!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Museum of Life and Science, Duke Gardens, Eno River, Nasher Museum, NC Museum of Art, Downtown Durham, Downtown Hillsborough
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Too many to list! But if I were to highlight one, it would be Mary Ann Scherr. I had the privilege of working for her after I got out of school She was an incredibly generous with her knowledge, and a champion of people.
