Meet Megan Allred | Wedding & Lifestyle Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Allred and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started my own business, I knew I had a huge passion for photography. Isn’t passion what fuels us all when we start a new venture or journey? Going after something I truly wanted and desired was the best motivation I could’ve had for creating and building a business. I wanted to not only take photos, but to gift others the memories they cherish in preserved heirlooms. Our important moments in life deserve to be treasured for now and for always. Being responsible for capturing these moments is what fueled my desired to create a business in photography.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Building my business and career has been a journey that actually isn’t quite that long, but does seem that way in retrospect when I think about how far I have come. I started in photography as a young girl who believed in taking photos for my clients to cherish for years to come. I most certainly hadn’t perfected my craft better until about 2-3 years in the business. I invested in education, better equipment, the resources I needed to grow. It was a lot of investing and trusting that these investments were worth it – and I must say they were. After applying myself and honestly, practicing, with my many clients who had so much Faith in me… this dream actually seemed like it was becoming reality for me.
Another part of growing in this profession that I put so much value into, is when I became a mother. Becoming a mom to my son in 2021 truly showed me how special the memories I was capturing for others are. I don’t think I fully grasped the deep value that my images produced until I was able to actually feel that value myself, in my family.
As I continued to grow my business, I not only built up clientele over time, but also built up relationships with other professionals in this industry. This is a crucial part of business. It allows you to learn more through others, support others in their individual journeys, and create more connections that are vital to your success.
I’m most proud of the hard work I’ve put into this business, because it was most certainly not easy. But completely worth it. There are typical challenges in photography that everyone has to experience… losing dear clients, knowing when to keep your business guidelines more strict, but also knowing when to give back to others.
Some may say that photography is an oversaturated market… I’m not sure if I believe that’s true (because I fully believe there are clients for all of us), but I do believe that you have to make yourself stand out in this industry. When I first started in the photography business, I didn’t realize the importance of standing out right away. Being who you are and having a brand that you fully represent makes your business, yours. And yours only!
I can look at my business and know that I am one of a kind in what I offer: classic, timeless, and happy images for the moments that we all care about the most. Being confident in my bright and airy style, and providing heirlooms for others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In my area, some may say there is not much to do but it’s all about what you make it!!
First things first… we would definitely plan a trip to the NC Zoo. That’s a huge staple around here. Maybe even make an entire day of visiting the zoo + downtown Asheboro! In downtown Asheboro there are so many places to be. A line of antique shops and small businesses, restaurants and bars, and just beautiful scenery in general. Also around our area is ziplining and the NC Aviation Musuem!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I am steadfast in my Faith and thank the Lord for everything I’m given.
A few dear loved ones come to mind when I think about who is responsible in the support of this business!! A small business can be ran be one person, but we can’t get there on our own. We all need help and I am tremendously thankful for the support and encouragement I’ve received along the way!
First of all, my husband. I couldn’t have this business without the never-ending support and encouragement from my other half, Ryan! He has been here every step of the way while I chased my dream and has never complained. He has continuously lifted me up and kept me going. He’s never questioned any of my choices and only encourages me to do anything I want to in order to succeed. Oh how I love him so!
When I was growing up, I had several different digital cameras (that I wore out very quickly because I could never stop taking photos with them), but when I got married my parents gifted me an actual DSLR camera. Which is what made me think “hey, I got a big girl camera so I could actually do this if I wanted to!” and that started my thoughts and plans for becoming a serious photographer. Thanks mom and dad!!!
My business coach, Stephanie Small, has fueled me with more knowledge, mentorship, and support than I could imagine. She took my full time business from good to amazing. She has poured so much into me and given me the tools I didn’t even know I needed to have a successful full time business.
Last but certainly not least, my dear friend and fellow photographer, Hayley. She’s the owner of Hayley Jayne Photo. She has encouraged me nonstop along the way of this journey, and we have both watched each other’s businesses grow and flourish. It has been my honor to be in her generous friendship.
