We had the good fortune of connecting with Me and My White Friend and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Me and My White Friend, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Our friendship started at Dick Broadcasting Company in Greensboro, NC.. Where Thomas , better known as “Intern Hugs” was an on-air radio personality for Jared & Katie in the Morning. Reggie worked in the digital department and helped create funny content for the morning show with Thomas. As our friendship grew through work, we had creative ideas that just didn’t fit with the stations brand at the time. So, we created “Me and My White Friend” in 2019 before the presidential election, when our country seemed to be pretty divided. We wanted to create a brand that brought people together through comedy and music.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
“Me and My White Friend,” is a sketch comedy show that is found on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. With a ten episode season on Youtube. Our brands main mission is to bring people together through laughter and music. Race is still a huge issue in American society and our goal is to show that no matter our differences, there are more things that bring us together as a human race, than divides us.

Both gentleman are schooled and trained professionally in the media business. Reggie graduated from North Carolina A&T State University with a degree in Mass Communications and received his Master’s at Elon University in Interactive Media. Thomas graduated from GTCC with a Theatre and Artist Management degree. Later, he attended Guilford College and earned a degree in Business. During their college years both men helped at the on campus radio stations. Thomas even having a show called “The Hugs and Chuckles Show.”

It wasn’t until 2015 that these two would meet at Dick Broadcasting Company (DBC), better known for their award winning radio stations 1075KZL and Rock 92. Working under two legendary North Carolina radio shows, “Two Guys Named Chris” and “Jared and Katie in The Morning,” Reggie and Thomas learned how to be professionals in the entertainment industry. Furthermore, because DBC is a small family owned business they learned first hand what is takes to run a successful media company.

The two built a bond creating content for 1075 KZL. “Intern Hugs” was the comedy relief for the morning show and often did ridiculous stunts such as being buried alive on Halloween or getting shot by paintballs in a Turkey suit during Thanksgiving. All the while Reggie was there with his camera.

While making all this content for the radio station, Reggie and Thomas had their own ideas. Thomas in particular, wanted to expand his creative horizons from just being known as an “intern.” The two even presented their idea to the general manager of the radio station. However, the idea didn’t fit the stations brand at the time. So with a leap of faith, both men quit their secure full time career jobs and sought out to produce their own show and podcast. Even, leaving North Carolina and moving to Los Angeles in February 2020.

Little did they know COVID would be right behind them. Though, Thomas’s wife had family they stayed with in Temecula, CA and Reggie had friends who let him crash in Los Angeles, the big city was definitely a challenge at first. COVID shut everything down and the two of them found themselves working odd jobs like Amazon Flex, TaskRabbit and even an underground dispensary on SkidRow. Thomas drove two hours to Los Angeles every week to create content with Reggie as they both slept on air mattresses for over a year.

Thankfully, in October of 2020 they got their first industry gig on “Wheelers & Dealers,” an automotive show owned by the Discovery Channel thanks to Reggie’s elementary school friend and producer Tiffany Luard. That first job lead to many more and helped Reggie establish himself in the business. Simultaneously, “Me and My White Friend” was going viral on TikTok and it gave the comedy pair hope to keep pushing. Thomas and his wife departed back for North Carolina in March of 2021 as they were expecting their second child and wanted to have the baby with familiar faces in their own home. From then to now, Reggie and Thomas travel coast to coast in order to create content and keep their brand relevant.
