We had the good fortune of connecting with Mayra Salonga Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mayra, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

Upon moving to the United States in 2018, I faced the challenge of adapting to a new environment and understanding the dynamics of the beauty industry in North Carolina. With a background in Esthetics and Beauty therapy since 2008 in Hong Kong, I encountered the setback of needing to obtain an NC state license, which required going back to school for a year. It was frustrating, going back to school for the same thing. But because beauty is all I’m passionate with, I pursue my plan to get in esthetic program. It was so hard for me as I don’t drive, no bus services for commuters in the city where I lived. Despite the absence of convenient transportation options, I persisted and overcome the challenges. In June 2019 I finally graduated at the program and eventually passed my Board exam with flying colors and got my Esthetic license.

At first, I initially considering getting a job as an employee in a spa or beauty establishment. But then, again God is showing me the vision to build my own name. Drawing upon my confidence and diverse experiences, I opened “Skin Reboot by Mayra spa clinic” in August 2019. Since then, my business has gained a reputation for providing exceptional service in North Carolina and maintaining 5 stars reviews.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Skin Reboot by Mayra” is distinguished by its unique and sensible approach to beauty treatments, blending traditional Asian techniques with holistic Western styles. My expertise spans various areas, including facials, waxing, eye enhancement, body rejuvenation, and the incorporation of the latest skincare technology. The most interesting part of my skincare art therapeutic is the diversity of my treatments and products. That sets me apart from others. I love learning and non stop searching for the latest, innovative and unique skincare trends from other countries. My signature products from South Korea, Holistic Treatments From UK, Chemical treatment from South Africa, Poweful Mask treatment from Spain and latest Non invasive machine from France and and HydraGlow machine from South Korea.

My journey hasn’t been easy, but through faith, resilience and determination, I’ve reached where I am today. But believe me learning doesn’t end there. I began with zero clientele and had to rely on Uber or Lyft to reach my clinic, often serving just one client a day, only to face last-minute cancellations or no-shows. These challenges sometimes made me consider giving up. As a newcomer in the country and the area, I hardly knew anyone besides my husband’s family and my extended relatives in other states. My husband, a software engineer and our family’s provider, and I are raising five girls. Our financial situation was tough, and I didn’t want to burden my husband with everything, especially the financial needs of my business.

To support my business financially, I worked as a waitress at an Asian restaurant before moving to Target for better pay and flexible hours, all while building up my clientele during the day. I didn’t want to spend too much on marketing, but through the grace of God, word of mouth became my strongest marketing tool, keeping my appointment fully booked even after COVID-19 hits.

Staying true to oneself, remaining humble, and turning to prayer when feeling overwhelmed has been my guiding principle. As an esthetician, I believe in embodying the spirit of a beauty. This means that we care by sharing and spreading kindness and love while providing our treatments. Giving back and sharing my blessings. As my community service, i commit to charity treatment project by offering a free treatments to those in need, such as woman from domestic violence abuse, cancer patients undergoing recuperation, and individuals who have gone through painful experience that suffer from anxiety and depression. It is a rewarding feeling to make someone feel regains their whole new confidence, by the therapeutic treatments that I’m providing. I want the world to know that being an esthetician isn’t just about making clients’ skin beautiful, but also about leaving them with a priceless pampering service that keeps them coming back.

I’m proud to have recently obtained my instructor license and am eager to share my knowledge with aspiring estheticians. With my two daughters currently in esthetic programs, we’re preparing to expand our spa clinic in coming future.

At “Skin Reboot by Mayra,” we are committed to providing exclusive, science-backed treatments rooted in faith, knowledge, and innovation. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am truly fortunate to have been surrounded by a circle of positive friends and supportive clients, who have continually motivated me to strive for excellence and reach new heights in all my endeavors. Growing up, I was uncertain about my career path and struggled with traditional education, excelling only in art, science, physical education, and music. Additionally, I believe that skincare is a kind of art. The fact that art therapy has a scientific foundation makes it much more interesting that makes me learn everyday. With the loving guidance from my parents steered me in the right direction, instilling in me the importance of prioritizing spiritual values and dedication to church activities. My dad’s constant reminder of the verse (Matthew 6:33), “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you,” has been a guiding principle for me, firmly establishing my decisions and actions. I am incredibly grateful for the unwavering support of my family—my husband, with whom I share common aspirations, my parents, my siblings, and my daughter’s. Their encouragement, motivation, and presence have been instrumental in navigating the highs and lows of life. Shoutout to God, his unspeakable presence has been a source of strength and resilience, shaping my journey and influencing my approach to life and business.
