Meet Maureen Scullin | Fine Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maureen Scullin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maureen, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe this about risk: If the potential reward is truly what you want to achieve, and if you can live with the the worst consequences that might happen, then I say “go for it”!
I’ve always felt that if you don’t embrace risk you might not ever achieve your life’s goals. I’ve taken many risks. Some have worked out in my favor and some have not. But, the ones that worked for me make it all worth the ones that didn’t. In addition, when you gamble and take a risk, and it doesn’t work, there can be incredible life lessons that you can learn from and apply in the future.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art journey began in Detroit with my father’s influence. He was a commercial artist who spent countless hours teaching me about art. I attended Parson’s School of Art at the New School. I became an illustrator working in the New York city area, doing book covers, magazine illustrations as well as art for Ad agencies.
When commercial art became inconsistent, I had to leave art and follow a different profession for a while to focus on my home and family.
I later turned my concentration back to my art and deciding to totally dedicate my work to fine art, I have continued to hone my skills by attending artist workshops and studying the great masters. I have been very lucky to have met and been tutored by many wonderful artists along the way. Artists are a wonderful community of human beings who passionately pass on their knowledge and skills. We have a great tendency to be supportive of one another.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would venture to downtown Raleigh and take them for a walk and show them all the incredible history. I would suggest having dinner at Gravy, lunch at the Raleigh Times and maybe visit a downtown rooftop bar. In addition, I would suggest visiting one of the many wonderful museums. Then, a trip to downtown Apex, NC and Cary, NC because both small towns offer a quaint walk with great art, shops and places to eat.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to my father and my husband. My father for passing on his artistic knowledge to me, spending countless hours teaching me the basics and encouraging me throughout my life.
My second shoutout is to my husband. Without him I would not have had the grounding, love and support to be where I am today. His support had been unending and he is the “practical” voice when I may venture too much outside the lines.
My daughters deserve a big mention as well. Once they were born I knew I had to work even harder at being a better human being. I loved them so much and wanted to show them a strong, moral, loving and ethical person. They are the best thing that has ever happened in my life.
