We had the good fortune of connecting with Marsha Coletrane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marsha, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?

Most outsiders are unaware of what an Esthetician is or the significance of what they do, let alone how to pronounce it. An Esthetician is a skin expert who performs advanced cosmetic services such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, eyelash extensions, and many more.

However, to be honest, before I became an Esthetician I didn’t know that much either. I just knew that I wanted to further my expertise in servicing my clients for two reasons.

One, clients who would get in my makeup chair would often ask how to take care of their skin, and what products to use. Second, many services can only be provided by a State Board Licensed Esthetician in most states, and North Carolina is very restrictive on cosmetic procedures that are allowed within the scope of becoming or being an Esthetician.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is all things that involve beauty. I’m a beauty geek!! I love it! beauty is science-based after all, and I think in every field creativity must be applied to approach things strategically or compensate for a lack of something.

Whether it is makeup, skincare, or consulting I have to get creative. I have developed the aesthetic that I specialize in and my approach to customization. I enjoy simplicity. Simplicity is refined, sexy, and confident. It is easy to overdo anything, which is a personal preference, but for me, it is unnecessary.

Sometimes a client is very straightforward and knows exactly what they want and need, and sometimes a client does not. When they know what they want, I have to use my creativity to merge with their desired expectations. And when they don’t I have to quickly evaluate and assess how to use my creative skills and provide them a vision that they are excited about and comfortable with.

For me overcoming challenges in my profession is learning constantly, being consistent. and persistent. Things will work out the way they are supposed to and the only way out is through.

You can do anything if you are willing to endure, which can be a high cost at times. I have often asked myself if it is worth it to keep pushing, I have wanted to walk away several times for many different reasons, but that fire for what I do cannot go away! Overcoming also means pivoting. Businesses that master that, are positioned to sustain longevity.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This a hard question because I am not a Raleigh native and I only have lived here for a few years.

The pandemic also played a major part in my ability to explore and battling breast cancer has contributed too.

I am busy with my family and work. I rarely eat out because I enjoy cooking my favorite meals.

I guess you can say my home is my favorite spot. I like that I am raising my children in a great community and I have space to garden and a beautiful back porch to lounge and have a cocktail or two with friends.

However, I am looking to the future and I’m excited about all the things Raleigh has to offer. It is a wonderful place to live.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my husband and children, definitely my mom, and Elevate Salon Institute.

My family supported me through esthetic school and didn’t complain about the sacrifices we had to make as a family to reach my ambitious goal.

My mom and husband would often talk me home on the hour-long drive from school to home.

Elevate Salon Institute gave me a top-notch education and thoroughly prepared me to pass my state board exams. I also felt very prepared to work confidently as an Esthetician.
