We had the good fortune of connecting with Mandi Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mandi, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
There are so many factors contributing to work/life balance based on priorities in life. As a licensed massage therapist for 17 years my personal and professional life has changed in many ways. My daughter was in the 2nd grade when I started my LMT journey. Building a practice as a parent, my work schedule was partly dictated by my daughter’s school and activity schedule, as well as being available to patients at the times they preferred. In the beginning it was important to be flexible and available to build a consistent client base so during this time the priority to be as accommodating as possible to build a thriving practice…leaving little work/life balance. Once the business was booming I was able to take a breath and enjoy more “me” and family time. As a small business owner working around appointments, people often think you don’t have a “schedule” but maintaining set hours is is incredibly important to establish balance and boundaries. For me, structure is very important and I’m a better therapist when I don’t over extend myself. Maintaining a personal and positive self-care routine allows me to provide the best care to my clients. As an example, my schedule is Tuesday-Saturday working two mornings and three afternoons. I see between 3-5 patients per day because I’ve found that works best for me, my family, and my awesome clients!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
You know honestly I’m just really proud of the relationships I’m able to create with my clients. In this business you’re not only helping people with physical ailments, you’re also helping people feel better mentally…and I don’t take that lightly. I’ve worked hard over the years to be open and accommodating to get to know them and make them feel welcomed when they walk through the doors. Most of my client base are returning and loyal folks and I’d like to think that has something to do with the healing relationship we’ve formed. It’s an awesome feeling knowing you can brighten someone’s entire day, week, month in just 80 minutes!

Regarding challenges, I guess understanding my schedule and limits and getting comfortable not seeing 60 clients a week as it was just too much and really taxing both mentally and physically. With age comes wisdom! Also in today’s world there’s a lot of distraction and lot of healing options (which is fantastic) so establishing an online brand and delivering a consistent message was critical. I’m on social media every day and that takes time, but it’s a must…and can be fun too.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooh, good one…I’m in Holly Springs so here’s what we’d do. Definitely head over to Raleigh to check out the Art museum and the natural history museum. One day we would go hiking in one of the many options around here, like Bass Lake and Lake Johnson, which is a personal favorite. We would eat…and eat a lot…at Vieni, Osteria G, Nightingale, and the Pimento Team Room. Maybe grab a drink or too while we’re at it. If my daughter’s visiting we always have to have fresh ice cream, so Fresh is a must. And with all of this eating we’d have to stay active so we’d take advantage of the many greenways in the area to walk, run, or bike.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband and my daughter for being an awesome support system during this wild ride!
