We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Myers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I worked 30 years in a very competitive sales environment for a company in the Washington DC area. The constant stress of quotas, Federal Acquisition Regulations, and the competition internally and externally to always be in the top had me pretty much burned out. When I retired in early 2019, my mothers’ health was declining so we moved her from VA to our home here in Leland, NC. The time I got to spend with her was a God-send. Unfortunately, she passed away in September 2019. Then I was finding myself with the “what in the heck” am I going to do now. I have always loved art but did not have the time to pursue it. Covid hit, and I took several on-line classes from numerous international artists. I was hooked. Since then, I have also taken several workshops from very talented local artists as well.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I joined the Art League of Leland (ALL) and took a marketing your art workshop, and decided to take my art to the next level. I am currently on the Communications Team for ALL. I also joined the Wilmington Art Association. I chair the membership team and, I am on the Board of the Wildlife Artists of the Carolinas. I am also a member of the Brunswick Council of Arts and the Cameron Art Museum.

I have been blessed the past two years to be juried into several art shows. I have also had my work displayed into some local galleries as well. I have painted some commission pieces.

I wrote and illustrated a children’s book. And since then, I have illustrated two other authors’ children’s books.

My paintings emerge out of the pleasure of the painting process. Experimentation is what excites me as an artist. The process is a journey and the final art work is usually a surprise. Vibrant color, layered surfaces textures are used to make intriguing, inviting and imaginative art. My body of work includes watercolor, acrylics, mixed media, and collage.

I paint in a way to express my joy in the colorful world we live in. For me, painting is mystical and flows naturally from creativeness that links my mind and heart together. The act of joyful and whimsical painting keeps me grounded and grateful for every moment.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Wilmington area is so full of beauty and history. I love downtown Wilmington because it reminds me of a mini- Georgetown, DC with all the older brick buildings, wonderful restaurants and boutique shops bordering the Cape Fear River Walk. And of course, there is Wrightsville Beach and Oak Island. It makes a fun day to go to Southport, then take the Fort Fisher Ferry over to Ft Fisher and the NC Aquarium.

There are so many great restaurants in the area. It’s a seafood lover’s paradise. There’s too many to list, but some of my favorites are Caprice Bistro, Indochine, Cape Fear Seafood, The Little Dipper, Savorez and Circa 1922.

We have great venues for theatre and music in the area like Thalian Hall and the Wilson Center. There is an abundance of talented musicians in the area and fun places to go hear them.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
After I retired and my mother passed away, I felt like I was floundering a bit. I came across an absolutely lovely lady and women’s mid-life coach Bec Martin. I took her Bloom with Bec program. Bec gave me the confidence, clarity and tools I needed to start my second career as an artist.

My husband Wayne has been one of my biggest supporters. I truly appreciate all the time he spends with me going to downtown Fourth Friday Gallery Walk and all the great art shows in the area.

Also, I have met, so many seasoned and talented artists in the area. The support and kindness they foster for a relatively newbie in the local art scene, is quite refreshing.
