We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsay, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We decided to formalize our beekeeping business in 2017 after many years of pursuing it as a hobby alongside our full-time jobs. We recognized a strong need in our community, Brevard, and the surrounding region for locally-produced raw honey, locally-adapted bees, and hands-on educational experiences.

From the start, we focused on growing the business slowly and sustainably. In 2020, Devin took the leap to work in the business full-time after a job loss during the COVID-19 pandemic. I (Lindsay) continue to balance another job, which helps diversify our family’s income—an important factor given the dynamic nature of farming.

What should our readers know about your business?
Bee. honey+hive is more than just a honey business—we’re passionate about sustainable beekeeping, fostering strong local bee populations, and sharing the magic of honeybees with our community. We specialize in locally produced raw honey, locally adapted bees, and hands-on educational experiences in Brevard and the surrounding region. Our goal is to connect people with the fascinating world of bees while promoting ethical and sustainable beekeeping practices. What makes us unique is our commitment to both the bees and our community. We focus on raising resilient, locally adapted bees, ensuring they thrive in our mountain climate rather than relying on imported stock. We also go beyond just selling honey—we offer apiary tours, educational workshops, and beekeeping mentorship to help others learn and grow in this field. Beekeeping can feel intimidating, but we strive to make it accessible and engaging. Whether someone is buying a jar of honey, starting their own hive, or simply curious about pollinators, we want our customers and community to feel welcome and inspired.

Getting to where we are today hasn’t been easy. We started as hobbyist beekeepers while working full-time jobs, gradually building the business in a slow and sustainable way. In 2020, when Devin lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we made the leap—turning Bee. honey+hive into a full-time endeavor. It was a huge risk, but it also allowed us to spend more time as a family and fully commit to our vision. The biggest challenges have been navigating the unpredictability of farming—from weather impacts on honey production to colony losses that are sometimes out of our control. Financially, it can also be a rollercoaster, as agricultural income is dynamic. I (Lindsay) continue working another job to help diversify our family’s income, which gives us stability as we continue to grow the business. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that resilience and adaptability are key. Beekeeping—and business ownership in general—requires patience, problem-solving, and a willingness to keep learning and evolving. We’ve also learned the importance of community—our success wouldn’t be possible without the support of friends, family, and loyal customers who believe in what we do. We want the world to know that honey is more than just a sweet treat—it’s a product of careful stewardship, hard work, and a deep respect for nature. Our mission is to bring people closer to that process, one jar of honey and one hive at a time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We live in a beautiful part of NC. Hopefully my ‘best friend’ enjoys being outside, because those are the best places to see and experience in this neck of the woods. We’d likely go for a hike in Pisgah National Forest or Dupont State Recreational Forest, see some waterfalls, or get a picnic and head up to watch the sunset on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Otherwise, we may hear some live music or hit up a local brewery or restaurant.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There have been so many people along our journey who have supported and encouraged us. First and foremost, I’d like to give a huge shoutout to Devin—my spouse and business partner. From the start, he was open to this crazy idea and willing to take a leap of faith with me. Leaving the stability of a steady paycheck for the ups and downs of self-employment isn’t easy, but this journey has given us something invaluable—more time together as a family, which was one of our biggest motivations for going all in.

I also want to recognize our good friend, Andi Sigsbey of Etowah Creative Co., who helped bring our logo and branding ideas to life. Andi is an absolute gem—her creativity, organization, and efficiency are truly amazing, and we couldn’t have asked for a better person to collaborate with.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to our friends, family, and the incredible Bee. honey+hive community. Our success wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of friends cheering us on and the loyal customers who believe in our honey, bees, and mission. We’re so grateful for each and every one of you!
