Meet Linda Freeman | Swing Dance Instructor, Yoga Instructor, Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Linda Freeman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Linda, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
In our epidemic of loneliness, we need connection. We at Got2Lindy Dance Studios have been fostering connection in the Hudson Valley, NY since 2004, turning non-dancers into dancers and strangers into friends with weekly group classes (all are welcome, no partner necessary), monthly dances and special events. Our speciality is swing dance (lindy hop is the authentic american dance style!) and our focus is fun and building community.
What should our readers know about your business?
It is rare in the swing dance instruction world to have a husband and wife team who have worked so joyfully together for almost 20 years! We complement each other in our teaching style due to our own different learning styles and understanding of that for our students. Because we both learned the dance as adults, I work exceptionally well and emphathize with beginners and those with “two left feet,” My husband who came at the dance with a background in music and conducting, works exceptionally well with students who learn faster and are eager to perform his choreography and “dance like Chester.”
What is most important to us, though, is not how many great dancers we produce (though we do), but how many friendships are developed in the dance community we have formed. I am proudest of going to parties and recognizing that everyone there met at our dance classes. I love seeing students loiter together outside class knowing that none of them knew each other before class began. I love hearing how they get together to practice. I love seeing them evolve.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Of course, I would try to schedule their visit to coincide with one of our swing dances so they can get a taste of what we do and meet all our other friends! I would also take them to the Garden Cafe, a vegan restaurant in Woodstock, NY, and I would check out who was playing at the Falcon, which is our neighborhood music hall.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband and partner, Chester Freeman, without whom I could not be fully who I am, and nor would our swing dance business.
