We had the good fortune of connecting with Lenore Braford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lenore, how does your business help the community?
Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge (the Refuge) provides lifelong care to rescued farm animals, educates people about the realities of animal agriculture, and promotes veganism by offering knowledge, support, and community. The Refuge is a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in Pittsboro NC. We reach thousands of people every year through our on site and online educational programs. By connecting people directly with rescued farm animals, we work to help the public understand the true nature of these animals and foster a more compassionate world.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
A unique aspect of the Refuge is our ground breaking work in the field of Animal-Centered Design. Each species that we rescue, including chickens, cows, goats, and more, are provided with homes and habitats that have been specifically designed to meet their individual needs and wants. The result of this work is unique-looking structures that help our animals feel at ease and express their natural behaviors. These buildings help to visually tell the story behind our work and mission: that we value farm animals as special individuals and recognize their differences.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge is open to visitors through our Tours and other scheduled events, as well as through volunteering opportunities. Visiting and volunteering is great for kids and adults alike, and is a unique activity to introduce to friends and family. An added bonus is knowing that you are benefitting the wonderful animals who call the Refuge home.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As the Founder of a non-profit animal rescue, I have faced many challenges, both personal and professional, throughout the past 11 years. Without the support of my partner Paul, I could not have faced and overcome these challenges. In addition to being a supportive partner, husband and friend, Paul also lends his architecture and building skills to the mission of the Refuge.
