We had the good fortune of connecting with Kylie Faulhaber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kylie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue an artistic career because I have always really enjoyed being creative. As I grew older, I became infatuated with tattooing and the culture and history behind it. Also, being able to create custom designs for people who want it on their bodies forever is such a huge honor, I’m so happy that my art will bring people joy for the rest of their lives.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The road to a professional tattoo career wasn’t exactly easy. I’ve worked a lot of long days, double-shifts, had super late night drawing sessions, dealt with art block and depression, and have had plenty of anxiety attacks because I was extremely overwhelmed. Tattooing is extremely stressful in the beginning stages. While perfecting a craft, you’re gonna make a lot of mistakes, and sadly with tattooing, we can’t erase those mistakes. So with every blown out line and poorly packed color, it really started to take a toll on me. The only option I had was to get better, and thats exactly what I did. My apprenticeship wasn’t very traditional and I had to teach myself a lot of stuff, but with a lot of research and practice on fake skin, fruits, and really really good friends, I was able to make my tattoos better. Now that I’ve been doing this for a few years, I’m much more comfortable with my machine and technique. I like to tattoo many different styles and subject matters, because honestly if I did just one style for the rest of my life I would get so bored. By constantly doing different things, it makes my day-to-day very interesting and pretty fun as well. Now, I’m still learning, I’ll probably always be learning, but thats okay! Learning is a big part of my career! There’s forever changing trends, styles, programs, equipment, and each client has their very own unique situation. With a combination of their own skin structure, background, and inspiration, each appointment is it’s own adventure! I believe that I genuinely have the coolest job in the world, and that all of the blood, sweat, and tears that were shed in the beginning was all worth it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I haven’t been in the area super long, but there’s a bunch of cool spots that we’ve discovered! For food there’s Lams kitchen which has great Chinese food with pretty big portions, the food hall thats connected to Super G mart has a bunch of Asian cuisine and some sweets as well, there’s also Super Food Cafe which has fruit and açaí bowls as well as some other healthier options. Another food spot is a bakery called Amalies, very good sweets and not super expensive. To hang out: I haven’t personally been to the amusement park Carowinds but have heard a lot of good things about it, Camp North End is a business center thats pretty large and has a bunch of different shops inside of it, food and clothing included, theres also free movie nights pretty often and are pet friendly I believe. For more hangout spots, there’s Monster mini golf, Frankies which is a smaller amusement park/arcade that also has go karts, mini golf, bowling, a bar, VR games, and smaller rollercoasters. For some drinks, I’ve been to Pins and Mechanical and Super Abari game bar.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Throughout my life I’ve been extremely fortunate to have supporting parents, friends, and partners who have encouraged me to chase my dreams. I wanna make a special shout out to my long time partner Amari for always being there for me and motivating me when I couldn’t motivate myself, and for loving all the parts of me that wanted to give up anyway. I’ll be forever grateful for all the kind words, support, and love that I’ve received over the years from everyone around me.
