Meet Kristin Ellison | Food Health Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Ellison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started Smarter Than Medicine as a health and nutrition resource. I have older family members, and even friends, who would reach out and ask, “What should I eat to lose weight?”, “How much protein is too much protein?”. I have elderly family members such as my late grandmother who was a cancer survivor, and she would ask me to come with her to her doctor appointments. It was in those appointments that I discovered there is not much talk about nutrition and even less communication between doctor and patients as far as what medicines should be discontinued and what medicines interact (positively or negatively) with each other. I decided to obtain a Master’s degree in Nutrition Science and take everything I have learned to family/friends, social media, networking events etc. I found my home in food nutrition and I have been here for 5 years officially as an LLC.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Smarter Than Medicine started as a Food Nutrition business (and still is) and now with being a new mom, I am happy to venture into the nutrition space for littles (kids). Learning about what the newer generation needs I feel is what sets us apart as a business. I feel this way because it takes Smarter Than Medicine out of the “too late” or “maintaining” stages of health and nutrition and into the real “preventative” care of nutrition. Being a mom and business owner has taught me more patience, which I feel is already an instilled personality trait, and stretching my patience to wait on the best timing for opportunities. For example, I recently started a juicing service to my business however the process was a 2 month journey of learning about permits and legal knowledge. After learning and being patient, I feel I have a new sense of what it means to be a business owner and to trust that God knows the best time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely start with food! Brunch would be at my place (Omelette with veggies, turkey bacon/sausage, cold pressed juice, fruit), Quick drink from the Milk Lab in Southpoint Mall. The rainbow Jasmine tea is the best! Lunch would be in Cary at Noodles Boulevard for their savory Curry Ramen. Dinner at Elijah’s in Wilmington, NC for the fresh seafood. Desserts at the Parlour downtown Durham. We would take a few dance classes at Empower Dance, get facials with Poppin Skin Spa, and visit some of the museums in raleigh/durham area.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God, my family, my friends all have helped shaped the pieces to my puzzle.
