We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristian Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristian, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
As a birth doula, I believe that we can educate and empower women and their families to make the best decisions for themselves when it comes to their pregnancies, birth, and postpartum experiences. Feeling completely supported during such a pivotal time in a woman’s life as she brings new life into the world can be a big factor in how she views her birth story, whether or not it went the way that she desired and planned for it to go. Continuity of care is so valuable, and a birth doula provides that kind of care from conception all the way through postpartum. Birth doulas serve first time mothers, mothers of multiples, mothers wanting a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean), single mothers, and more. Birth doulas believe that the more supported and empowered a woman feels, the less likelihood she will struggle with perinatal mood disorders.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I became a birth doula in early 2018 after the birth of my first child. I had a birth doula myself and the knowledge and impact she imparted on me was life-changing. I felt called to serve other families in the same way that she had served mine. I went to a birth doula training, became certified, and began shadowing and working under the very same doula team that I had hired! What an incredible opportunity that was. I’ll never forget all that I learned through those ladies and how much they’ve impacted the work I still do. In late 2021, I decided to begin my own doula business. I planned in the beginning to remain a solo doula, but soon realized that I missed the team aspect of being in a group of doulas. Being part of a group allowed for a better work/life balance, and I wanted this work to stay sustainable for me and my family. Burn out in birth work is very real. Throughout the next year and a half, four doula partners organically came to my business and each one just seemed like the perfect fit. We are currently a team of five doulas and we offer birth doula support, postpartum doula support, birth photography, childbirth education classes, placenta encapsulation, and more.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Central North Carolina is full of so many amazing restaurants, attractions, and experiences. I would most likely take my best friend to Greensboro for a stay at Proximity Hotel. We’d have afternoon tea at O’Henry Hotel (the sister hotel to Proximity). Later, we’d have dinner at Print Works Bistro, located inside Proximity Hotel. The next day, we’d visit the Civil Rights Museum in Downtown Greensboro, followed by a little bit of shopping. Downtown Greensboro is rich in history, architecture, and has the most unique little shops.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe so much to my own birth doulas and midwives who have served me and my family, mentored me, and loved me. Each one has partnered with me in some way, whether through my own birth experiences, or teaching me as I got into birth work. I could never repay each of these ladies: Cortney L., Deb F., Shannon M., Christina F., Jessica B., Sarah C., Sarah S.
I also can’t not give a shout out to my husband and better half, Paul. Without him, this work would not be possible for me. He is the man who drops everything and runs when I get called so that I can drop everything and run to my clients. He picks up the pieces that are left in our home and with our children. Being a birth worker and a parent is almost impossible without a good support system. He is my biggest fan and I’m incredibly grateful that he sees such value in what I’m honored to do.
