Meet Kiea Taylor | Salon owner & Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiea Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kiea, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business I wanted to create a safe space for not only myself but for everyone who entered! My first job after finishing nail school turned out to be a toxic workplace. Even after deciding to put my best foot forward, I quickly realized it was not the place I wanted to be nor was I comfortable being spoken down and made to feel less than I actually was. I decided that in the long run I wanted to be have more control over customer service and overall experience. While at the same time providing and creative and open professional space to thrive and grow in! I do believe I’ve accomplished that mission with much more to do of course!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most proud of my growth in this industry as is concerns my art itself and my platform. I’ve worked hard to be a beacon of light and positive energy in my industry. One major lesson I’ve learned throughout the years is that I can’t want something more for someone who doesn’t want it for themselves. Throughout the years of being in business I’ve come across people that initially presented themselves as “all in”. I quickly learned the difference between being all in for only yourself and for the betterment of the team. Dealing with and learning to keep my personal feelings separate from my business decisions has been a challenge but I feel I’m getting better at it than I was before. Through trial and error as well as a few bad experiences with a couple bad egg’s including going through taking one of those eggs to court for embezzlement. I now have a system where I can get ahead of most of the issues I’ve experienced in the past. I don’t usually go through the same problem twice as I’m a quick learner!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m always down to do something different! I had my days where going to the club at all hours of the night was fun but I feel I’ve grown in that department. For a week long trip I would plan out the days with great food and unconventional activities! Escape/rage rooms, museums, skating, bowling, sightseeing and walks through beautiful nature filled scenes would fill out our itinerary for the week. I would cater it to the individual person based on what I know they are interested in!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother and my grandmother deserve recognition whenever I speak about my business. They both have been instrumental to the success of my entire operation. My two younger sisters as well for helping me with absolutely everything they could. In the beginning it was more financially difficult for me alone so everyone helped where they could. Nowadays it’s helping with packing and shipping orders, designing and printing labels, making body products and promoting. My business is truly a family run company and I’m so proud and thankful to them all!
