Meet Kenzie Davis | Licensed Marriage Family & Therapist, Notary Public, & Ordained Minister

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenzie Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenzie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I think it is important to know where you come from to understand where it is you want to get to! As an African-American, still learning my heritage and history, I feel it is important that I create a legacy of success, excellence, and wealth for myself and for the generations after me. I believe this business allows me to be in a precious place- being able to represent and be an advocate to people that look like me. I have the power within me to influence my community and I want to pass that belief on to those I am able to connect with!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am most proud of how I show up for my clients. I vow to be authentic, compassionate, and consistent with each interaction I have. Getting to where I am now was not easy. There were times were I felt depressive symptoms, anxiety, and disappointments about my life. I overcame these challenges by learning to balance all the facets of life! Listening to myself and giving myself grace. I changed my unhealthy habits, thoughts, music, etc. and started loving myself in a new way! This experience helped me to learn that everything is temporary, feelings are fleeting, and situations can change. I have the power to change what is in my control! And what I cannot control I know I will survive it, so I can be a vessel of hope to the next person.
The big thing I want people to know is that they are powerful! YOU ARE YOUR GREATEST ASSET! Believe in yourself and watch your world change. This is my brand. This is what I believe.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I split time between Raleigh/Durham and New Bern. So, if in New Bern, I would suggest a tourist to walk downtown, where they can enjoy the vast waterfront with views of million dollar yachts and other boats. Next, Tryon Palace is a historical building downtown, as New Bern was once the capital of NC and this is where said royalty stayed. New Bern also has an African- American tour that highlights the impact the Black community had on the city. In addition to these attractions, there is a fun art studio downtown. Notable restaurants would be El Taco Loco (authentic Latin), the Country Biscuit (breakfast), and Sumo Bowl (Japanese/Chinese).
In Raleigh/Durham, there are free museums and free tours of the capitol buildings downtown. There are plethora of parks, walking trails, and botanical gardens. There are major athletic events (Hurricanes Hockey, Duke & UNC Basketball) and fun city festivals (State Fair, Black in August, Chinese Lantern Festival). Food I enjoyed in RDU is Buffalo Brothers (American), Lee’s Kitchen (Jamaican), Jack’s Seafood & Soul Food, and Favor Desserts.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so thankful for my community of loved ones that encouraged and cheered me on while on (and still on) my journey! My parents have been innate cheerleaders reminding me of value since I can remember! Also, Dr. Williams, my professor in my MFT program, was a powerful aid in becoming comfortable with myself and pursuing this career. Dr. Williams was the first person to show me what unapologetic Black Excellence looked like in the professional White world. I don’t think Dr. Williams will ever know how much she impacted my life as an African-American and as a woman and how influential she is in being proud of myself and the work I do with my clients! Lastly, I thank Father God for allowing me to do this work. He truly helps me in my emotional/mental stability, so that I may help others.
