We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, what makes you happy? Why?
Whew, what a loaded question haha. When I think about what makes me happy, the first thing that comes to mind is: making others happy and simply for the fact that I know what it feels like to be disappointed, hurt, let down etc by someone but more importantly, what it feels like to know I’ve made someone sad.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What can I say about my art? It’s created with and through love and I believe that’s what sets me apart from other bakers. Yes others may love what they do, but when the gift/talented is birthed through the love of Christ.. it just hits different.

It took a lot to get to this point. It took giving up, it took quitting before I really got into it, it took being ridiculed and asked ‘are you sure this is what you want to do?’. It took being waitlisted and then accepted to the best school for culinary & pastry arts in Toronto, it took almost giving up due to health issues and COVID-19 and finally it took graduating with honours— something I never thought I’d achieve to get me to this point. Have I arrived? Absolutely not but I’m on my way.

A key lesson I learned is patience with myself. I’m not going to get every technique on the first try, shoot the second or third try but if I’m patient with myself and my craft and study effectively and efficiently, eventually I’ll get it and might even tweak it with a little bit of me!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This series is firstly, dedicated to everything I lost in this season because it showed me that it could happen to anyone— no matter how good you perceive yourself to be. Secondly, this series is dedicated to my heartbeats, Elisha & Breon who have taught me laugh differently, love differently and to see the world in a different way. I love you to the moon and back <3. Lastly, to the one who reminded every chance she got that I was worth it, that I could do it: B thank you for your love and support. I pray God blesses you immensely, just as you’ve been a blessing to others. Te amo <3
