Meet Katie Miller | Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It all started because I gained an interest in Renaissance Festivals in my 20s. Immersed in the vibrant culture and diverse events, I became involved with a group specializing in various skills such as sewing garb, crafting armor, and creating weaponry. It was during this time that the group introduced me to the art of crafting chain maille, starting with a simple weave. I found myself enjoying the process, and after a few months, it led me to explore more intricate weaves while also letting my creativity flow freely. Over time, I ended up with a bunch of unique items, and it occurred to me that I could turn this into a business. I know there’s a lot of jewelry out there at craft fairs and online, but I felt like my pieces were different enough to stand out in a market full of similar stuff.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When it comes to my chain maille and chain maille jewelry, I believe what sets me apart is the distinctiveness of my creations. While the concept itself isn’t rare, the style, colors, and design I incorporate are uniquely my own. I take pride in the fact that I rarely produce exact duplicates of items; even when making multiples, each piece maintains its individuality. This business hasn’t been easy, considering the abundance of jewelry crafters. Nevertheless, I persist and continually put myself out there, participating in diverse events and celebrating the successes along the way. I don’t let setbacks from previous events hinder my enthusiasm for the next one.
My brand is all about being unique and strong. I want people to know that every piece I make has a story of creativity and hard work. It hasn’t been easy, and I’ve learned a lot along the way. The challenges taught me to adapt and keep getting better. Through it all, I’ve discovered that pushing through difficulties and remaining true to my distinctive style has been the key to carving out my own space in the world of jewelry crafting.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a bit of a foodie – so we’d have to include some local spots in Downtown Fayetteville. One of my favorite casual places to go for food is Archway Burgers, Dogs and Beers – some of the best burgers I’ve ever had and their onion rings are top-notch. Gaston Brewing Company is a great place for a beer and a small bite. For dessert, we’d probably stop at Rude Awakening Coffee House or The Sweet Palette. Dirt Bag Ales Brewery & Taproom is a little outside of town but also a favorite spot to hang out, listen to some live music, eat some good food, and have a drink. If it’s baseball season, I’d have us take in a game at Segra Stadium and cheer on the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a big shoutout to my friends and family for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout the years. Without their backing, I might have given up on this endeavor a long time ago. Nothing but love to you all!
