Meet Katie Greene | Co-Owner, Birdies Coffee & Treats

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Greene and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
Focusing on our family has been at the core of our business model since inception.
Tiffany and I have been the best of friends for 12+ years now and our families have followed suit. We have five kids between the two of us that stair step in age, all of which are now thick as thieves. In 2022, we decided to pursue business ownership together and knew that we wanted our families to be at the foundation of our brand DNA.
Our kids have been involved in the process from the beginning and have grown to be our greatest cheerleaders. They have been present in the daily operations, as well as the behind the scenes work and decision making. The lessons and life skills they have learned are invaluable. Our kids have seen us take big-time risks in the name of spiritual obedience. They have witnessed us learn new skills and have the humility to ask for help when we didn’t know the answer. They have walked alongside us through Birdies failures and successes. Our prayer is that they can look back on this period of time together and know that they too, can do hard and scary things.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Birdies is about two best friends chasing simplicity and a love of coffee, treats, quality time, and community. Our vision took flight in May of 2022 after careful consideration and a desire to build a family business together. Birdies values partnership and we have sought out some of the best in the industry to help us spread our wings.
After 6 months of operating out of a camper on 321 between Boone and Blowing Rock, NC, Birdies Coffee & Treats was approached by Watauga Medical Center about opening up in the main floor of the Schaefer Family Patient Tower. We have been honored to have the opportunity to now serve hospital staff, patients, & visitors since September of 2023.
We know that you can get a decent cup of coffee anywhere. At Birdies, we try to create a unique customer experience that sets us apart from others in the area. We are intentional with our menu and work to keep it fresh and relevant as the seasons change. We value relationship over transaction and want to get to know our customers – whether a regular or a visitor to the area – and are forever excited to tell folks about these mountains that we love.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Visiting the High Country offers reprieve from the hot and humid temperatures down state. Although we are known for scenic views and outdoor recreation, there is so much more to do and see!
Of course, everyday should start with your specialty espresso drink from Birdies Coffee & Treats! Our 321 location is easily accessible and situated conveniently between Boone and Blowing Rock, making it the perfect start to any day plans.
Turning left out of Birdies 321 location will give you a straight shot the Blue Ridge Parkway access, which will provide stunning long-range views, hikes, and picnic areas. The Linville Viaduct and the Rough Ridge Trail are some of our favorites. Price Park offers a beautiful picnic area along a winding stream. Views are always stunning, but best time of year to visit the Parkway is in Summer and Fall.
After the Parkway, you’re going to need lunch and downtown Blowing Rock has a ton of options. Some of our favorites are the Speckled Trout, Social on Main, Bistro Roca, and the Town Tavern. While your downtown, you have to check out the recently opened Firelight Book and Candle! Sweet Mimi’s boutique is a must for women and children’s clothing.
Take it easy on day 2 and spend some time walking through the Mustard Seed Market – family owned and operated here in Blowing Rock since ’92. Myers Kitchen and Pantry is a perfect stop for lunch and to stock up on gourmet prepared foods for an evening in.
Day 3 starts watching the sunrise at the Thunderhill Overlook on the Boone side of the Blue Ridge Parkway. You could then easily continue on the Parkway to find a beautiful section of the Mountain to Sea trail. No questions that Stick Boy Kitchen would be for lunch (try the Gouda-ness Gracious Sandwich!)
Take an afternoon tour through the Campus of Appalachian State University and spend the afternoon strolling through King Street. Some of our favorite shops are Lililu on King, the Lucky Penny, and Common Good Co. Don’t forget to check out the candy barrel at Mast General Store! Our top picks for dinner in downtown Boone would be CoBo Sushi Bistro and Bar, the Local, Vidalia. Finish the evening at Venture Chocolate and Wine Co.
Adventurous travelers or those with kids should most certainly check out High Gravity Adventures and Tweetsie Railroad. During the summer months, take a float down the New River in Todd. Booneshine Brewery is also a must (family-friendly!)
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our story would not be possible without the love and support of our husbands! They have supported us from day one and do a lot of unseen work for Birdies for $0.00/hour.
