Meet Katherine Rollins | Journalists & Streamer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katherine Rollins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katherine, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was working two full-time jobs; they were good jobs, but I was unhappy. Both of those jobs were not fulfilling to me. I had always wanted to be a journalist for a video game magazine. Once my youngest child was old enough to be somewhat self-sufficient, I informed my husband that I wanted to try to go after my dream job. I did research, created a brand and brand style, and began creating and posting.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a journalist, I travel the East Coast going to different conventions interviewing people in the video game, comic book, and cosplay industries. If I can’t interview people at the convention, we schedule a virtual interview. I have a YouTube channel, The Late Night Nerd Show, and that is where the interviews are located. What sets me apart is that the interviews are more like a conversation between friends, and you get to listen in. I have had guests feel nervous about being on the show, and by the end of it, they are amazed at how comfortable I made them feel. I also stream video games. I am not a professional gamer; I play for fun, and I provide comedic entertainment for my viewers. My viewers know that for 2 hours, they are going to get to laugh and be welcomed into a safe, fun, environment. Plus as an added bonus, I have a shoe cam! So every month, viewers get to see new, unique shoes because, after all, I can’t be TheHighHeeledGamer without showing off high heels.
It was not easy for me to get to this point in my career. I spent a lot of time looking at others who were ahead of me in the same career and feeling defeated. I had to remind myself that they started before me, and when they did start, they were exactly where I was. So, instead of comparing my growth and success to theirs, I started viewing them as motivation, thinking, “One day, I will be where they are.” I had to learn that in the world of social media, not all is as it seems, and nothing happens overnight.
My brand is about fun, laughter, feeling safe and welcomed, and knowing that no matter your age, you can go after your dreams.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are spending the week mostly eating. I love food, and there are so many great restaurants and food trucks in the Raleigh area. I am taking my friend to lunch and a movie at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema I am in love with their Royale with Cheese. The lemon-garlic aioli is soooo good! After lunch and the movie, we would walk down the strip to Little Blue Bakehouse. We would grab a coffee and dessert, and honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the desserts they have! From the ice cream to the macarons to the cupcakes and everything in between, it’s all so good! The next day, we are looking up where Berto’s Chimis Food Truck will be located for the day (they usually team up with a bar or drafthouse) and head that way. I am Dominican, and Berto’s Chimi is home for me! The first time I ate their food, I had tears in my eyes because the first bite took me home.
The following day, we are heading to BoxCar for old-school games, drinks, and a great time.
I would try to have my friend visit during a week that Geek N Grub is having an event. Geek N Grub is pretty much an all-day family event filled with vendors, fun games, and, of course, food. Geek N Grub also has themes for their events, and it’s so much fun.
Finally, I would take my friend to the Raleigh Famer’s Market to get fresh, locally sourced fruits and veggies. I would take them to Bee Blessed Pure Honey to get an array of different kinds of honey. It’s no offense to any other honey sellers; I just have a soft spot for Bee Blessed Pure Honey because it is run by my Big Brother/Best Friend.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have such a great support team! From my husband, Zac to my three kids, Jacob, Janna, & Joseph. My sister Kimberly and her family, my best friend Louis and his family. Imani “Lil’Chaos, who has not only been a great mentor but a wonderful friend as well. Just to name a few. But honestly, there are so many others who have helped me along this journey.
