Meet Kamesha Portress | Business Manager & Realtor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamesha Portress and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KaMesha, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
That I need to focus on what value and gifts I bring to the marketplace. Sometimes, we can get so distracted by looking at what others are doing that we become stagnant or afraid to make a move. I’ve learned to lean into my own uniqueness and skillset, and as a result, it has opened other avenues for me to grow in my business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career in real estate began in Georgia during the winter of 2018. Fueled by grief and a desire to find purpose, I took a chance and purchased a real estate course off of Groupon. I self-studied for four months, passed the proctor exam, but initially failed the state exam by three points. On my second attempt, I succeeded.
What I didn’t realize at the time was that schooling provides knowledge about rules, regulations, and guidelines, but it doesn’t teach you how to actively engage in real estate. I truly learned how to conduct real estate transactions through hands-on experience. There were moments when I wanted to give up; I had no clients when I first started, and it took months before I landed my first client. Nearly a year passed before I closed my first deal. It wasn’t easy. I had to overcome self-doubt and faced rejection. I encountered some costly mistakes but learned invaluable lessons along the way.
Instead of giving up, I focused on building my brand during downtime. I nurtured my relationships with other agents and individuals outside the business. During COVID-19, I obtained my license in North Carolina and concentrated on a niche while educating myself about the various aspects of real estate. I became a new construction specialist and advanced my knowledge of land and land development. I leveraged my skills in administration and stewardship, which allowed me to pivot my business as a whole.
Last year, I took a leap of faith and left corporate America to pursue what I believe is my true calling: helping others create generational wealth and maximize their current real estate investments. I learned that walking in my purpose is less about me and more about guiding others on their journey to ownership.
What sets me apart from others is the experience I provide my clients. They are educated and equipped before, during, and after their journey.
I take pride in inspiring others to enter the real estate field. I am excited about what the future holds! I look forward to building a team and opening my own brokerage in the near future.
I am in the business of serving others, and I believe in operating with excellence. This isn’t just a career for me; it’s my ministry.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a self-proclaimed nerd, I would definitely want to check out some exhibits downtown at the Harvey Gantt Museum or catch a play at the Blumenthal Theater. Weather permitting, we could head out to Veronada Winery for some lunch and drinks.
I’d also like to schedule a day of pampering at Rockbarn Spa. We should visit the French bakery, Tous Les Jours Southend, and then do a little shopping at South Park Mall.
In the evening, we can enjoy some live music and dinner at the Dilworth Tasting Room. Other dinner spots I’m excited about include Southern Pecan, Fine and Fettle, and Del Frisco’s.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to express my gratitude to God for His grace and favor. I have been tremendously blessed to have a supportive tribe of family and friends.
My beautiful mother, the Honorable NC State House Representative Carla Cunningham, took a chance on me and was the first client I managed as a Business Manager.
My mentor, Mrs. Latonja Worsham, always encouraged me to recognize the winner within me and to embrace my authenticity.
Chamberia Daniels for motivating me to get into real estate and for paying it foward for me.
Simone Trice for gifiting me my first photo shoot.
Finally, Dr. Linda Chinn saw the gifts within me before I truly understood their value. I am grateful for all of their support..
