Meet Judy Morgan | Veterinarian and owner of Dr. Judy Morgan’s Naturally Healthy Pets

We had the good fortune of connecting with Judy Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JUDY, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Large corporate entities are taking over veterinary medicine, now owning approximately thirty percent of veterinary practices. “These firms have also vertically integrated in the industry, many also buying up the labs where medical testing is done, and the insurance firms that pay for — and more and more frequently deny coverage for — a pet owner”, according to Senator Elizabeth Warren. It is becoming difficult to find independently owned veterinary practices. Unfortunately, there is also a shortage of veterinarians, causing long wait times for appointments and an inability to find veterinary care in an emergency. The cost of veterinary care has risen sixty percent over the past few years. Our goal at Dr. Judy Morgan’s Naturally Healthy Pets is to educate pet owners to keep their pets as healthy as possible to avoid the high costs of veterinary care. We also want pet owners to have the knowledge to ask good questions when they take their pets in for exams and illnesses.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Dr. Judy Morgan’s Naturally Healthy Pets is an e-commerce and educational platform based in Zebulon, North Carolina. We are proud of our integrity and honesty within the natural pet space. We work with many small companies that have developed incredible products to keep pets healthy using natural therapies. Every product must be made with human-grade ingredients. The companies we work with must also uphold the highest standards of integrity and honesty.
Our educational platform is designed to help pet parents expand their knowledge to keep their pets as healthy as possible for increased longevity and time spent with those they love.
NHP was started in 2016 in our garage in New Jersey. I never imagined it would grow to what it is today. When my daughter, Gwen, wanted to take over as COO in 2020 and move the business to North Carolina, I agreed but was unsure whether the company could grow to provide a salary for her, as I had never taken any salary. Not only did she grow the business to support her salary, she has hired ten new employees and I have finally been able to collect income from the business. It has been important for me to grow the company organically without taking on investors or debt.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I rarely go into the city. I love the farmer’s market and go there often! I’m a farm girl. My granddaughter loves the Marbles Museum which is highly recommended for anyone with children. We recently attended a Durham Bulls game which was an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. We had afternoon tea at the Heights House for Valentine’s Day; it was romantic and delicious. I’d love to check out the botanical and rose gardens. We live between Wendell and Zebulon and we are excited that new restaurants and shops are opening in these small towns to support the increasing population in the area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Hue Grant, and my daughter, Gwendolyn Campbell. Hue helped me start Naturally Healthy Pets in our garage in 2016, doing all the shipping, assisting with technology issues, and handling many daily details. Gwen became COO of NHP in 2020 and has been instrumental in making the right hiring choices. She has grown the company organically through her incredible management skills.
