We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk. Gosh, this one is CRUCIAL when it comes to being an actor. While training at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, my mentor and teacher for everything I know about acting, Dr. Jonathan Drahos taught me to be comfortable with uncomfortability. Never allow yourself to be stuck in a comfort zone with not only life but with your craft because, once you do, you stall yourself from evolving into the actor and man you want to become in life. Get to where you want to get to in life before making a comfort zone.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So my career is the life of an actor. Being an actor is something that is meant for everyone. but for those who are blessed with the talent and the gift, it’s something that will never be contained and satisfied with trying to work a 9-5. I’d say the biggest thing that helps me stand out is that I’m a supporting and active actor. Instead of trying to take every opportunity to show off what I can do I put all my energy into my fellow actors to feed the energy to make every moment and every scene that I have something that you get immersed with the scene and have you think you looking into our lives, not sitting here watching a play. It was not easy getting to where I am now. I’ve had to take a lot of risks from quitting jobs and just traveling wherever I was needed to get to where I am today. I’m blessed to have been in a Super Bowl commercial, music video, and dozens of short films that were in many film festivals, along with being in three feature films one with me being a lead. I’m currently in a project where I’m the lead for a production called Governor Inspector I’m honored to be able to tour to New York City March 4-10 of next year!! The biggest thing that I’ve learned about being an actor is you need to always have yourself open to criticism from your directors and peers and just have an open mind to express and show anything that needs to be seen. If nothing I said got to you let this sit with you and stay in your mind for as long as you can remember. You ONLY have ONE LIFE, LEAVE IT TO THE FULLEST!!! PUSHING FOR YOUR DREAMS WILL DO NOTHING BUT BRING YOU JOY HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS DONE THE RIGHT WAY. DON’T SIT ON YOUR BUTT COMPLAINING HOW YOU CAN’T BE HAPPY OR CHASE YOUR DREAM IF YOU NEVER TRIED. NOTHING NEVER HURTS UNLESS YOU TRY. And I promise, if you try you’ll be surprised just how things will go.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a great friend coming to my town and they have never been I want them to explore things they have not explored and tried before. So first things first, on day one were just resting at home, and at night going to a very classy bar and just talked and enjoyed some soothing jazz and just caught up on what we’d missed. Night two, we’re going to wake up and just make a dope breakfast at home. Nothing is more soothing than enjoying a great meal in the comfort of your own space. Continue to rest up and just relax, no need to stress about trying to cram so much stuff in one day. go to a nice sports bar, watch some basketball and football games do a couple of inside bets amongst us just to make it fun, from there for dinner we’re going to a ramen shop. Day three was decently relaxed at this point, got the rest and wide down from the day-to-day that were accustomed to. On day three were going shopping to get some new fits, you know style out for the one time. look at some cars at a dealership to see some cars that we are interested in and even see if we can get some deals. Afterwards will look at the local auditoriums to see if there are any local shows we can go to, from high school to Broadway level, and see if we scout out any potential rising theatre majors or rising actors. Day four is party day. Not much of a club person, but let’s try it out for the one time. go to a nice brunch in the morning, and we just going to try to find nice clubs to party in that’s not too crazy, do a little bar hopping and just have a great night of dancing and just going wild. Last day, Day five we just gonna take our time, and make sure we do the proper steps (if needed) to get ourselves together to be able to handle business

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I was raised by a village that took me in and raised me. I want to shout out My mom and dad; Wayne and Cheryl Brown for raising me the best way they knew how and for giving me the foundation that I have today. I also want to thank my siblings: Tierney, Wayne Jr., William, and Reginald Brown; thank you for all the life lessons and all the little moments we had growing up. Good and bad, no siblings could ever replace you four. I also want to shout out to all the mentors growing up. Mr. Glover, thank you for being a good man and helping me understand how to move through life the right way. And friends that helped me get to where I am now. Deshown Miles, you are the reason that I found what God put me on this Earth for. I Love You and Miss you dearly, lastly, I have to shout out my main three boys who currently keep me on my toes with acting: Jamonte Madison, Sean Deam, and William Oxendine. Thank you boys for being here and pushing me every day to strive to be the actor I’m supposed to be.
